What is the first step in creating a site with site builder?

Do I purchase a VIP subscription first or do I get a server first?

STEPS:
* get a server
* install jamroom
* install the Site Builder package.

Your going to need a place online for your site to display. So getting a domain name and a server is first. Once you have a place that you can see in a browser, then you add jamroom to that to help you manage your location.

Once jamroom is installed, you can extend it by adding different modules and skins. Site builder is a collection of some modules and a skin.

Theres a lot too each of those steps, so take one at a time slowly, get it done, then move on to the next.

Best to ask each question in a new thread so we can address that issue, solve it, then it becomes useful for others later on.

I already own a domain name on godaddy that I will use until I get the site built

vintagerising.com

Then when it's set up I will tranfer my Thevintagevillage.com to the new site.

You dont need a VIP members subscription to install it. The Vip Members subscription is to get full access the forum here, read and write, rather than just read. But your writing right now anyhow so for now you can talk to us. :)

Any hosting account should work. The one we have been recommending lately is this one:

https://www.arvixe.com/jamroom-hosting

But are trying to get setup to be able to compare hosting companies so it will be easier to make a decision on which works best.

Read this thread:
"Have to move off arvixe now"
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/new_posts/22114/have-to-move-off-arvixe-now-linode-digital-ocean-other

about faster options.

Sorry for not having a "Go Here" option at the moment.

Lora, if you are starting to build your site without importing a Ning archive, then probably the $10/month arvixe shared personal server is sufficient for now. It WON'T be sufficient once you have members going live and lots more content coming in, but you could save some bucks by just building your JR site on it and upgrading later. I am having issues because of various factors, but my initial problem was that i had my 30GB ning archive on there- actually TWO of them at one point briefly, while I was importing a fresher archive and before deleting the older one. They put up quite a stink at that. But without a big archive, YOU could probably use that cheap shared server just fine for a while till you go live. Perrie likes BlueHost- you might want to check that out as well. I have heard that GoDaddy is just not sufficient for a social network of any decent size- but I don't know much about that, just stuff heard.

I see what it requires. Where do I find that? In the market place? I thought when I installed the site builder, the system core was part of it.

First install Jamroom. Its the first thing to do.

So watch this video to see how thats done if you have cpanel hosting:
Easy Install Jamroom 5 CMS into cPanel server

Also pay attention to the last part where the marketplace credentials are entered. Once thats done you can use the marketplace inside your jamroom to install new modules and keep it up to date.

Heres a video on that:

Lora McMeans:....jrWidget not found! fail jrMenu not found!....

That part means you have not installed the Widget module. Look for "Site Builder - Widgets" in the marketplace.

The second part is jrMenu, look for "Site Builder - Menu" in the marketplace.

Also make sure you have:
* "Editor Embeded Media"
* "Site Builder - Panels"

No problem using any skin. Jamroom is a development platform for those who want to use it like one, so there are no real limits on how you use it. Its just a question of getting the right setup needed for it all to work well.

Eg: The Ninja skin makes the assumption that you might want to use the groups module so it has layouts prepared for when that module is active. Other skins might not make that assumption so you might need to alter them to get them working the way you want.

People using jamroom "Genosis - Family Tree Creator System" Will have different needs than those coming from Ning. Just different configurations of modules and skins in the system setup on the Jamroom core.

I am afraid to import anything because I am not ready to MOVE to JR just yet. If I fill out the global config for the ning import, it says
____________
Enter the system name of the Ning site you are importing from. This will be used in the email that is sent to all Ning members after import to notify them of their new login credentials.
____________

but I am not ready to move members yet.

Lora, I can answer this part of your question: no emails will be sent out to your members until you decide to make those emails happen and activate that. It will not happen automatically or accidentally. :)

Are you referring to importing parts of an older 2.0 ning archive you have?
I believe the JR import tool imports ning content from a ning archive..not from the actual ning site.

Oh- and when you 'import' anything it does not mean it's removing it from your active ning site...in case you were afraid of that. You can fool around on your JR site all you want without 'going live' or notifying or inviting your members.

Yeah - What Strumelia said!!
If you have a Ning archive, then import it as per our docs. You'll then have your Ning members, blogs, videos, photos etc. to play with and to get your Jamroom site looking good.
When that is done and you're ready to go live, get the latest Ning archive, import that, then send the emails (not forgetting to shut down your Ning site, of course ;-) ).

To add to that- Lora, if you have an archive, you can import everything, and then delete all the stuff and features you DONT wnat right in you JR site- just another way of doing it. I removing all my ning blogs from my JR site, for example.

Just one comment on that - If you remove just some blogs, or any imported items or profiles in JR, then do an 'up-to-date' import just prior to going live, you're liable to get them back again!!
If you don't want again blogs on your JR site, say, just don't import them.

wonderful.... I am torn between starting fresh and importing my 2.0 json files.

I have gotten rid of so much to conform to 3.0 set up that I am not sure I want to weed through all that again. But at the same time that means traffic would be low cause the site content would have to build back up again.

Thanks so much for all your support Strumelia and JR admin. You have no idea how much it will mean to me and sooooo many others to be on a site that actually works.

If it were ME (and my idea might not be the best plan for YOU) and i only had an old 2.0 outdated archive and a new 3.0 with no archive, I'd start over completely fresh with a setting up a new site with the features and categories all in place.

Once the new site was 'mostly' set up and functional, I'd start inviting everyone from my 3.0 to join the new site fresh. It might still lack a few refinements and functions, but that's ok. Then I'd run both for a month and suggest that during that time the members themselves pull whatever content they want to save over and post it to the new site. (they should be made to understand that they won't be able to merely point links to stuff in the old site, as that site will be taken down)
Meanwhile, I'd stimulate the new site with interesting new topics or a contest etc. And a forum or group called "Suggestion Box". Make them use the NEW site to post their talk about the new site and what it might need...not the old site. (this will help get them used to posting in the new site, even if it's mostly to gripe...sneaky!) Their posted gripes will actually be part of the growing process and will stimulate constructive activity and the sense of member inclusion. Just the act of someone joing and logging in and uploading their new profile image will be exciting for them and make it less of a dreaded unknown.

Once that 'tandem sites' time was up for members to copy content over that they want to save, I'd then disable the features on the ning site so members can no longer post NEW content for some features, and I'd close the old site to not accept new members, and add a big pointer on the home page directing new people to the NEW site instead to join. After another shorter period of time, I'd finally put the old site in 'frozen' maintenance mode with a screen message directing to the new site. After maybe a month of that maintenance mode (to catch people still stumbling over there through google links) I'd delete the old site and kiss Ning goodbye forever.

I have to remind myself that getting my new JR site 'just right' is going to be an ongoing process, so I need to keep my perfectionism tendencies in check. I realized that once my members start logging in there LIVE, they are going to be bringing up all kinds of things i may not have noticed or had a chance to tweak or fix yet. It's almost impossible for me to test enough in advance to catch and fix the hundreds of things that live members will notice. I plan to enlist their help in spotting problems and suggesting improvements- people tend to like to feel part of the process. Then I'll keep a notebook of the stuff I need to keep changing and I'll just work on one thing at a time. Otherwise I'd go crazy and be way too discouraged. As the weeks go by the members will see that you are improving things slowly and steadily, and I suspect they'll be excited to be part of that process.

I am going to be importing my fresh 2.0 archive, but that's because I am still on my 2.0. But I'll be using a lot of the rest of what I describe to prepare my members for the transition from Ning to JR, knowing that members usually detest change.
This is all just my own two cents, without even really knowing your site- so use what might be good for you and just throw the rest of it away if it doesn't appeal or apply to you and your situation. :)

great advice!!!! :)

I am so gun shy right now because the move to 3.0 was so hard on them. They were patient for a little while but when months went by and Ning still had not fulfilled it's programming, people started to leave and the ones who stayed are not active. I have a core of about maybe 60 people who are active out of over 3K. Ning just killed our community with the 3.0 failure. HUGS Strumelia... :)

1 - Landing page

2 - Member category for just sellers. Only members with permission via member categories can post in the photo gallery. Ning allows us to assign areas to members based on the category they are in.

3 - Profile pages with ability for some customization.

4 - Site wide photo gallery with search and or tags and categories (so that it's easy for shoppers)

5 - Site wide forums. I have three, but one is fine as long as I can have many categories to cover these three areas

http://thevintagevillage.com/main-forum

6 - Groups (open and private)

I can make a JR support person admin on my Ning site if that would help.
