Is this possible for viewing images

This is on the Ningja skin but it would be the same for any skin which has a complete page showing a list of all images.

So here is the thing, if you click on the option in the main navbar to show images it displays all the images on a page from all profiles which is great but if you click an image it then goes to that users profile to display it, then you have to go back to the main images page again to view another image from that page rather than going through the members profile images.

Is there a way to have the same navigation options to cycle through the images from the main images page so you do not have to keep going back and forth to profiles ? The option is still there for them to go to the profile by selecting the gallery link under the image if they want to go to that gallery on that persons profile if they prefer.

Possible, sure. Implemented, no. I think the restrictive point is the skins. You could set it up like that to display in a light box in the same way it works in the profiles. The skin would need to have the lightbox there to do that though.

So my first thought is its done without a lightbox because its un-certain if the skin will have that setup for the module page to use.

I'll go check it out, not 100% on that one. If you wanted to implement it at skin level then it certainly could be done.

@john-bizley, nice suggestion. I like it.
@michael -

Just to make sure I understand, the lightbox would be limited to the images on the current site-wide Galleries page? I can see waiting for the lightbox for 24 images but not hundreds or more. I would need to exit out of the lightbox to visit the member's page to do things like rate and like and comment on the image.

I think this is something that would be very helpful to my members but I don't think it's a critical must have -- a very, very nice to have for sure.

John - another way to do this, which would require not all that much alteration of one of the Galleries templates, would be to alter the href of target on the picture only to open in a new window. Not necessarily the most elegant way to do things but you would not lose your state in the site-wide galleries page and have access to all the commenting functions on the member's page.

That's the way I was thinking to set it up, but it could be setup however you want if done as a custom skin thing.

Yes the light box or the navigation viewer would be limited to the amount if images it would have to view at one time. For instance on Nings all photos viewer it would load the image into it's viewer then would show in thumbnails underneath the next six images to follow in the list. So this way it will only load one main image at a time as when you then click on the photo for the next image it will reload the page to show it and the thumbnails belwo will change as well.

I am not suggesting we must be like Ning as this is Jamroom but thought it might help to show how they are doing it to maybe get some ideas of how it might be done here.

Michael Ning used to do the photo viewing very much like we have here on Jamroom, it had a page listing all the images and then when an image was selected it went to a 'viewer' which you would move through that persons images. The viewer didn't open in their profile page as Jamrooms does but opened in a new page which you then moved though the images.

They changed this after requests by Network Creators so that if you went to the all photos page it would then display the photos in the viewer of all photos. It worked by once selecting an image it would open that image in the viewer then when selecting the next arrow it would reload the page to show that image and underneath it would show some thumbnails of the next six images. The same when selecting a category if they have been added to the photo page as this would display photos just in that category. When going to a member profile page and selecting one of their images from there it would use this same principle but only show images from that persons profile page.

Here is a link to a Ning site so you can see what I mean

This would be the all photos page: http://scarlett.ning.com/photos

And here is the link to a profile page. If you click the photos tab in my activity and if you click on one of the photos it will open like the all photos but only cycle through that persons photos and not all the site photos. There is also at the bottom of that photos list in my activity a link to show an all photos page of that persons profile which opens a page very much like the all photos page.

Here is the profile link: http://scarlett.ning.com/members/Scarlett

I would probably be interested in doing this for all my type of list pages especially the videos page. One more example of how it would be useful. Lets say I have 50 pages of videos in the video list and I click on a video on say page 23, this will open in the members profile page to watch but now there is no way to move back to the video page unless I click the browsers back button or by selecting the videos tab in the main toolbar which will open all the videos but then I have to remember which page I was on then navigate to there to continue checking out more videos.

I think a much nicer way to do this would be when in an all videos page, not a profile page, would be to have that video open within some sort of light box to view it which would also hold the video info and rating etc, much like the photos light box but without the next and previous options. This way you stay on the same page so you don't get lost and no need for going back and forth to pages.

Hope this helps in my way of thinking and what I am trying to portray. Once I get more involved in my Jamroom site I am sure I could figure out ways of doing this but thought it might be something you guys also may be interested in doing.

Adding lightbox support for the image grid page at the site level would be easy. What I would propose is:

- click on an image and you see it in the Lightbox
- click on the linked image name and you view the image in it's gallery (this already works).

Hi Brian, Yes Brian that would be a nice alternative as it just saves having to go back and forth if you are only wanting to browse the images from the grid. And yes if they want to view the main gallery of the members images they would just select the link that is already there and view in the profile.

Would this also be able to be done for video list pages in a similar way ?

Sure - any page that has photos on it can be "lightboxed" easily. The only issue in deciding though is does it interfere with the UI so the user can't view the item's detail page. Usually there is a title or something that goes with it though that we can link up to.

We'll get it checked out.
