solved Editing member comments

As the creator of my Ning site, I had the ability not only to delete comments but also to edit any comment from any member, irrespective of where the comment was posted. I don't see that option here. I see the trash can icon, but not an edit icon.

I have found this ability an important tool in effective moderating.

There are others from Ning asking about this specifically...just sayin'. It's a real nice feature if a member posts a useful long post but with one inappropriate sentence in it- like for example cluelessly posting someone's address and phone number. Good to be able to edit that out without deleting the whole post heavy-handedly. Otherwise the admin feels like they are swatting a fly with a sledge hammer. ;)

Yep. Stuff like that, exactly.

This can always be done by admin in the ACP Comment Datastore Browser - http://yoursite.com/comment/browser

For now you can do it in the DataStore editor - down the road we'll probably get a little "inline" edit for it setup - it's just not there at this time.

Paul -

It can be done but it's a real kludge and I wouldn't want to rely on it as finding a specific post out of tens of thousands could take a long time and require several searches in a stepwise refinement approach. And don't forget to use the help to make it easy/ier to find something specific.

Just a note on that %D get's converted to some non-Ascii character so you can't search on that.

Check out the "help" (click the question mark button) when in the DataStore Browser - it's got some features thatyou'll really want to know about - i.e.

_item_id:25

will take me directly to ID 25 in that datastore

user_name:brian

will find the user with the user_name key of "brian" in the User data store, etc.

We're working hard here to get all the little features that Ning users want in as fast as we can, but some of these will take time - if you could bear with us and use what is available for now until we have a solution in place, that would be great.

Thanks!

Yes, I read the help. But ...

How do I know I want to edit _item_id:25?

Usually I have some text in a comment. If I want to search that I need to find a relatively unique fragment and bracket it within %%.

I don't see user_name as a value in my list, but I can search on it. I can also view member accounts, get the user ID and search for that.

All doable from within the datastore browser, but, not the most straightforward way to do it. I don't have an unruly community so it's not something I do lightly or often and I did add words to the banned items list.

Hold your mouse over the delete icon for a comment and you'll see the ID in the URL.

I get the word Delete without an ID -- in Safari. I can press and hold and then drag and I can see the ID and then release, making sure cursor focus is outside the delete icon.

Safari tries to be cute and hide that stuff from you, which is why it is not my primary browser. I definitely test in it, but Firefox is the only browser I trust, so it is my primary browser. Highly recommend it!

I use Firefox a lot but it doesn't display GMail very well, IMO. As I spend so much time in mail, I want the UI to look a specific way, and Chrome and Safari do it for me.

Now that I know the tip I say that creating a UI to edit comments is not high on my list.

@Strumelia -

I can see how you might think so, and it would be a real pain if you had to do this multiple times per day. I've installed the ACP menu module that displays across the top of the screen, so grabbing an ID and going to the User Comments Tools menu is easy. Enter the Datastore browser, type in the ID and click modify.

I noticed one thing, which is when I take the extra steps, is that it forces me to take a pause and think just a little bit more about what I want to do. I find I am less likely to do something that I will regret when I have this little extra pause.

One thing I recommend to make this approach easier would be to make the comments field in the datastore browser for user comments a textarea.

The existing field only displays less than 100 chars and many (most?!) comments are much longer - making it hard to edit them here. The alternative is to copy and paste into an editor and then paste back in. Another couple of unnecessary steps.

Perrie- no, it's within the guts of your jr site. We are talking about sort of going in the back door using 2-4 steps to get to the user's comment text where we can edit it, rather than simply deleting their whole post or comment (which is very easy). Short answer- yes we can edit a post- but it takes a few little steps to get to that edit place.

Right now a DataStore stores everything as strings - it does not know which ones should be a texarea versus a regular text input. With Jamroom's modular nature too, I don't want to hard code field names in the DS browser either.

It's only a temp solution - we'll have "editable" comments as soon as we can.

Thanks!
