After 'enabling' smiley function everywhere, when I click to "configure Smileys" I get this error page:
CRI: Unable to copy modules/jrSmiley/templates/get_smiley.tpl to template cache directory: data/cache/jrCore
So I can't add any custom smileys. I saw the correct interface page the first time I clicked "configure smileys", but then after clicking on 'download default set' none of this worked anymore and i only get the error. I also uninstalled the module and then cleared cache and reinstalled, but same problems.

Plus, now when I go to add a smiley in a forum post, I get this oddness and I can't click on any of the 4 smiley choices shown since it only opens a drop down admin menu:

This has been fixed in version 1.0.7 of the module - update from your Marketplace and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps!

I left a little suggestion on the module's page concerning my hope that in the future this module will accept non-square custom smileys without squishing them into square shape. I have lots of nice non-square smileys i would have loved to add in for my JR site. This 'squarification' also renders non-square moving gif smileys non-functional. Thanks!

I've added in support for a "free size" in the Global Setting:
ACP -> SITE -> SMILEY SUPPORT -> GLOBAL CONFIG -> SMILEY SIZE -> free size

When this is set the smileys will have no size imposed on them and will be the size of the original image.

Its in the marketplace now. Its a good idea. Are the smileys you're using open source? could they be used as an alternative for the current default ones perhaps?

I paid someone so I could use their smiley set on my ning site- very modest one-time fee. I could ask them about making it available in JR, but there are a whole bunch out there, surely some 'public domain' ones available too.
It's kinda fun to add one at a time to the JR Smileys.
Thank you Michael!!!
It now works great for moving gif non-square smilies...now I can have a cool vomiting smiley.
However be advised if you set the sizing for "free size', the handful of generic smilies that are already installed in Jamroom all become HUGE. the fix would be to remove them, shrink them down to about 24px, and then re-load them. I tried resizing them right in place within the smiley module edit settings, but that doesnt seem to work- so easiest just to shrink those and re-upload them, or just get smaller or different ones from someplace anyway.
It appears one has to add in new smilies one by one anyway, but it's kinda fun so I dont mind at all- thank you for the update! :)

I think we're going to update this so the "free size" setting still sets a HEIGHT - that way you don't have to worry about getting the exact pixel size right - get it close and the browser will resize it.

I just updated the module so it now only sets the "height" on the smiley image - that should make it a lot more flexible as you don't have to resize anything. Version is 1.1.0 in the marketplace.

Let me know if you see any issues.

Hope this helps!

Brian, Michael, I was really loving the choice I briefly had with the "free size" option included amongst the sizing choices. I had started experimenting with it, and it was awesome! Can you put it back in to include the Free Size amongst the other sizing options we can choose? That way I can work on some awesome custom smileys if I like, with various dimensions- it gave me some great creative options. Like the vomiting smiley, which needs a bit of 'step awaaaay from the smiley' room. ; )

I do like that I can eliminate the 'text string' so that if I want to type "l o l" for instance, it won't turn that into a dopey face automatically. Like this: lol hmmm

Brian if you look at the attached image in my first poste of this thread, you can see that my "Admin Hover Menu" module is plastering itself over my smiley drop menu, making it impossible to select among the top rows of smileys. Is there a way you can keep it out of my smiley dropdown menu? I like using the Admin Hover Menu Module that i installed- gives me some nice quick shortcuts! But it's messin with my smiley menu selection window.

The "free size" option is going to be too much work - i.e. you will need to manually edit EVERY image you want to use, which is not a road we want to go down. Try the new way - I think you'll find it easier to use AND you can use any shape of smiley you want.

For now I would disable the admin hover menu until we can see why it is doing that.

Hope this helps!

Ok (imagine trembling lower lip smiley here), I guess I won't be able to customize and use the above vomiting smiley for example...it'd be way too tiny if it's overall as tall as all other smileys. Oh well (imagine puking smiley inserted here). I would have been happy to edit each custom smiley I added...many would be the same sizes anyway...but i can understand why you might want to avoid having to explain that to puzzled people.

Well at least now the smileys don't all have be square or else get squished...

But I'll have to also now test to see whether animated gif smileys get de-activated simply because their height/size is changed by Smiley module. That'd be a total bummer if so, as my members are very devoted to various amusing gif 'action smilies' we've been using for years. Will get back to this thread after a test of animated gif smilies, but not til after Thanksgiving I'm afraid- houseguests coming soon! Thanks!

Admin Hover module- love it and was using it all the time until it bullied its way into the smiley menu... DURN!

It would not be hard to add back in - I just wanted to be sure it was needed before making it available. My main concern is that when someone selects the "free size" because they have a new smiley they want to add that they feel needs to be bigger, it means they are going to have to hand modify EVERY single smiley.

That's a bug - we'll fix it.

Thanks!

Maybe if you label the choice as "free size all smilies" or "all smilies actual size", then they will see if it creates an effect they don't want and they can revert to a uniform size choice again... ? just a thought.

Thanks for looking into the adminhover smileymenu bug!

This is fixed now. It was kind of a clash. The "Admin Hover Menu" didn't check for ajax loaded stuff and the smiley module didn't say it was loading via ajax. Updated both modules, its in the marketplace now. Update your system and you should be good to go.
