solved IE 9 Compatibility Issue?

One of my clients can't update his profile pic. I signed in as him and did it in 3 different browsers, so I asked what he was using. His response was:

I'm using Internet Explorer 9 on a laptop running Vista 64-bit.

I did try uploading a different photo also a JPEG and got the same message saying that my photos need to end in .jpg

Is IE 9 supported? Is someone going to look into this or should I tell him to just update his browser?

The rule of thumb is current version minus one. So IE11 and IE10. The problem you run into as a developer is how much time and effort do you spend making sure your software supports older versions for a handful of people. You might tell him to try Firefox or Chrome if he has it on his system. Vista however died out a long time ago and who knows if any of the current browsers actually support that OS.

That just means the file that the user tries to upload needs to have a .jpg extension

flower.jpg will work fine, but
flower.jpeg will not work because it is 'jpeg'

if that's the error he's seeing, rename the file to whatever.jpg and try again.

Hi Michael,

Actually that's not the problem. He's a graphics expert and knows all about extension types. I even got him to email me the image and his log-in credentials.

I could upload it with 3 different (modern) browsers, but with his system he get's that "false" message. It is a .jpg but his system causes Jamroom to reject it for some reason.

I suspect it's an issue with his outdated browser?

IE9 is definitely out of date, but I believe it still works on the file uploads (note that I believe IE7 and older are not supported at all).

I will load up my Windows XP VM that has old browsers in it I use for testing and see if I see an issue.

I have IE9 on a windows 7 on an office machine at work.

Ken, you have my email address, so if you send easy login details for an account and the image I will test it during the week.

Must add, you should definitely tell him to update his IE or get another browser. There is no real excuse for using an out of date version of IE, and I'm amazed that anyone is using even an up to date version - it still isn't 100%, and given it's history it shouldn't be given the slightest bit of loyalty or sympathy.

have you tried using ie9 from developer mode? I never thought it was as accurate but you can try it. Hit F12 and then ctrl+8.

Dazed - I don't really know what you mean. Does the developer mode in JR5 allow you to replicate different browser experiences? Or are you saying try running IE 9 in a special mode?

Through the browser. Open IE and hit F12 to bring up developer tools. You can emulate IE9 from there.

Ah... Ok thanks. I tried that and the picture uploaded, although I'm not sure if I was doing it right (emulating I mean).

Ken, I just emailed you. Attached is the replacement-image.jpg which I have successfully uploaded to a jamroom using IE9.

The original image001.jpg wouldn’t upload using IE9, so I resaved it using photoshop as replacement-image.jpg

I tested this on jamroom.net rather than directly on your site.

I suspect the original had been saved with a color profile or something incompatible with IE9.

Awesome... Thanks a lot Steve...

If I'm understanding the issue correctly, even though it was .jpg it wouldn't save with IE9 because it was a "weird" jpg.

That's probably due to the fact that he uses "Pro" image editing programs, and "uncommon" settings.

Now it makes sense to me. I'll just tell him to resave with run-of-the-mill settings, if he wants to upload in IE9.

Yep, something like that - the file info said it was saved by photoshop back in the summer and there was a color profile embedded in the image - could have been that color profile causing the problem. I opened the image in Photoshop CC and did a "Save for Web" as a jpg, and that new version uploaded successfully.

I used IE9 on Windows 7, and Photoshop CC was newly installed today.
