I see we have a Timeline in Jamroom but cannot seem to find a module for an inline activity feed. Is there going to be one or am I missing something somewhere ? This was a big thing on Ning and was much waited for.

Hi John, and welcome to Jamroom.
Not quite sure what you mean but maybe the jrUrlScan and/or jrEmbed might be what you're looking for?

Hi Paul, thanks for the welcome, I am finding my way around bit by bit. This is in referance to the timeline, if you have it displaying the latest activity on the site which is as one would expect but what there does not seem to be is a way for a user to just add something directly to the timeline unless they go back to their profile then add something there. So they have to leave the page, add something, then go back again to look at the activity rather than staying on the one page.
Also in a relation to the timeline how do you leave a message in another members profile. For instance I am following you and so I go to your page but there is no place for me to add a message or comment to your page. Not talking about email or private notes as you have them but rather me just leaving something like " Hey paul thanks for info and here is an example of what I mean ". I hope that makes sense, please feel free to let me know if not and I will try to give an example.
Thanks again for the welcome
John :-)

With you.
Jamroom is 'profile centric' and as you have discovered you can add to your own timeline from your profile page but you cannot post on others. You can comment on profile timeline posts though.
What you might be looking for is the next release of the Ningja skin which should have profile comments, the same as Ning so you can just say "hi" there

Thanks Paul, I will look into those skins. Just using the Jamroom ones for now so as to find my way around the system in it's default mode first.

John, hi and great to see you here! :)

I can't answer for the JR team, but I do feel that if you are looking at the regular jamroom modules and skin in its 'default mode' and then asking why Jamroom is not looking or functioning more like ning--- well it might be more logical for you to be using the skin and modules that the JR team has been feverishly tweaking and developing to have those ning-ish functions.
The current focus as I understand it is on the custom "Ning Bundle" with its Ningja skin and modules -getting it to properly receive ning archived content and to have familiar functions and feel for ning customers when they migrate to JR.

@Strumelia's right @John-Bizley. In a lot of other systems a skin just controls colors but in Jamroom it controls features too.

The skin designer is the one who gets to say what Jamroom does by releasing the content that's been uploaded to the profiles.

Some skins will be setup as general skins that try to use all the modules available, while others are built for more specific purposes and don't show of some modules at all.

You can customize a skin to make it do whatever you want.

An example of very different skins are:
"The Media Pro skin Demo"
http://demo.jamroom.net/jrMediaPro/

and
"The Genosis Family History Online skin"
http://www.genosisfamily.com/

Both run Jamroom 5 but if you put the family tree building modules into MediaPro they would not appear on the skin at all. You could make a "Music and family tree" system as a skin but you would need to do some customization. :)

If your thinking Ning, then right now Ningja is the skin you'll want. I expect that once we get that skin sorted feature wise that you will see others bring out more skins aimed at Ning users.

Question in this. While we are building our own sites, a lot is dependent upon these skins (unless you build them yourself). So they do an update with additional features, but the update does away with prior features that I liked. How would one retain those features they liked, but still get the additional features of the new skin?

It depends on the method you choose to use to alter your skins.

Optional Methods to Alter Skins:
#1) Download the .tpl files of your skin and alter them on your pc with a development tool like dreamweaver, phpstorm, or a text editor. Then re-upload your altered template to your site.

#2) Use the built in editor in the ACP of your site to change the code via the TEMPLATES tab.

If you are using the first method, #1, then you would use a version control system to keep track of changes to the code. The teams preference for a version control system is GIT but you could use whatever you liked.

If you are using the second method, #2, then you would alter the templates to get them how you like them then when an update comes in you could use the COMPARE button to compare how your changes line up with the new updates, then just add in the changes you want.

Michael, I'm a little foggy on this: you suggest using the Compare and then adding the new template's changes to our own custom template we've been using, OR the other way around- adding our previous custom tweaks to the new template? And... how do you suggest cloning the skins be a part of this? Thanks for clarifying.

This should explain it a bit more thoroughly:
