If you are thinking of migrating from Ning to Jamroom, we are still looking for a few Ning sites to do the migration with as a way of beta testing the process and ironing out any final issues.
Please post here if you interested in helping us out in this way.
Thanks
Pa

i dont have the experience of the above poster but have plenty of web design experience not php though html and especialy css
website http://www.dreadlockssite.com
the archive was incomplete groups and discussions failed 1/2 way through with "unable to write to this location choose another and retry"
i tried again on a brand new empty 2 tb drive with same results at same spot
nings attempting to download it for me
in the meantime im uploadingthe data now its taking 3 days so far
the test sites www.greentechnologyforums.com
this is a temporary test domain once im familiarized with jr and im happywith the design ill download a fresh archive and recreate on the www.dreadlockssite.com domain

i curreenly have a 3.00 ning http://ww3.dreadlockssite.com
i am hoping i can recreate a simular style although im always up for the challenge of recreating a whole new fresh style

Hi - Thanks for posting.
How big is your Ning site?
Please read though the Ning2Jamroom document at https://www.jamroom.net/ning-to-jamroom/documentation/ning2jamroom so as to understand the import process.
You would need to set up a Jamroom site on some hosting somewhere (we can help with the setup if need be), create an archive of your Ning site and upload that archive to the Jamroom installation, after which we could do the import for you.
Or, as an IT/Data Analyst, you may feel confident to continue with the import yourself following the documentation, which would be a help to us as it would test our documentation as well as the import process.
What do you think?

Hi @soaringeagle - Thanks for posting
As with @jkn above, I'd suggest that first you read the import documentation so as to understand the process.
I see that at www.greentechnologyforums.com you have already uploaded the Jamroom Core but that it now needs installing. Do you need any help with that? If so, send your site FTP and cPanel logins to support[at]jamroom[dot]com so that I can check it out and do the install for you if you want?

ps
upgraded to dedicated server since the vps and cloud servers topped out at 160 gigs and already used 110 for other sites and the site data was 150
now i got 8000 mp3s and about 2000 vids
the vids are nearly all embeds only 333 uploads the uploAd limits were 10 min and 100m the embeds many are 15-20 min a few up to 2 hours with hd
are embeds turned into mpeg4 too
would you estimate i might go over the 2tb even on just the test
if embeds are converted i might need to add a drive right away

When you talk about embedded videos you mean like YouTube?
Jamroom can handle embedded YouTube and Vimeo videos and providing the import script can extract the relevant IDs from your embed code, it will create a similar Jamroom embedded videos where the actual stream comes from YT or Vimeo.
So to answer your question, the embedded videos will not take any significant amount of your server disk space.

ah ok good that was my primary worry
ok i should be ready for a test migration once the ftp uploads complete
1 more question
is there a way that once i do a redesign and build a new site structure as well as style that that can be moved to the new domaikn and just the new data be imported?

Actually, moving a Jamroom site is pretty easy. See https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/howto/1077/howto-change-the-jamroom-directory-or-domain

If you are actually moving servers, as well as moving the files over, you would also need to export, then import the Jamroom database as well.

Any structure and style changes made on Jamroom are made either in the templates, or are saved on the database, dependent upon how the changes are made, but either way, when doing the move as described above, they will follow the Jamroom.

Can I politely ask that any questions like this are asked in a new thread in the 'Questions About Jamroom' category? That way, we can keep threads 'on topic' which makes things easier to find and track for us all down the road :-)
Thanks

same although i cant write js or jquery if my lidfe depended oln it i can often debug decoconstruct and get lucky with rewriting and same goes for php to a degree and i have beta tested every single feature of both ning 2 and 3 and probly caught more bugs then anyone due to my eye fir detail and many of them fixed long before the nung folks could fix them (if they could be fixed witgh css that is)
im definately more of a artists then prtogrammer when it comes to site design i get way into styling of every detail and it drives me crazy when i cant getthings right down to a single pixel

Hi Paul, I wrote you a couple days ago. I am going to be getting some help in the process from my friend Troy, and Troy and I would like to test moving my Ning 2.0 site to JR. Troy may have gotten in touch with you already. Thanks, meanwhile I will be reading the info you linked to in order to get acquainted with things.
I successfully made a complete archive of my network several weeks ago but will now be making a fresh copy which will take a couple days as you know. I would like top be part of this beta process, based on what you have written me so far.
My musician based ning 2.0 site is 5 yrs old with 4000 members: http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/
Many many thanks to the JR team for creating a ning importer tool. I'm excited to see what we can do about hopefully creating a new home for my members.

But whilst waiting you can install Jamroom and start playing and getting the hang of it.

I am interested in being part of the test migration to Jamroom, I have installed the JR core and also uploaded my Ning archive. I have a small Ning 2 site with just 160 members - susanboylereal.ning.com. the website has just celebrated it's 5th anniversary. I have little to no knowledge of html or CSS so I will probably plague you with loads of inane questions

That's great.
Take a read of the docs. here - https://www.jamroom.net/ning-to-jamroom/documentation/ning2jamroom - so that you have an understanding of the Ning2Jamroom process, then follow the docs. up to where you have uploaded your Ning archive to your server. Then get back to us with your Jamroom site URL, FTP and Jamroom logins (email them to support[at]jamroom[dot]net), then we'll do the rest. When its done you can take a look around the new site and decide then if you want to stick with us here at Jamroom :-)

At the moment, yes. From what I understand, there is as yet no Ning3 archiving tool. When there is, we will take a look at it and see what we can do. Hopefully, Ning3 archives will be in the same format as Ning2, in which case it'll likely be the same process as importing a Ning2 site.

you should also know that theres a chance (not a guarantee yet) that 2.0 and 3.0 data might be able to be merged
if users that are on both use the same login info
otherwise they maybe orphaned profiles but theresa user account to profile olinking sysatem that alows multiple accounts to link to 1 profile
so
in thoery once the archivers out..in the next few weeks from my understanding that then it maybe possible
and
since i have both 2.0 and 3.0 in use ill volunteer asa test merge site

Quick update:

Since moving from old host of many years to a cheaper alternative last summer - I've run into wordpress attacks every other month or account suspensions due to too much activity. I'm rethinking my host at the moment - cheap is definitely what I paid for and I don't feel confident just giving them more money.

I have not had a chance to install jamroom on my current host, yet - and I'm thinking about whether I will or not. I may move to one of the jamroom recommended hosts for this.

I used Arvixe for a couple of years or so, and I must admit my experience with them was a "negative" one.

like i said with hostforweb.com ive had a great experience with awesome support (though u might have to repeat yourself a few times with the support team)(and ocasionaly translate your english into geekspeak so they understand the issue)

i had a server vpswith godaddy that was a nightmare crashed every 15 minutes or less
i switched to hostforweb and havent had probs since ..well minor glitches in migrations and such but they have been on the ball solving any issues i had

on the issues of reviews being untrustworthy my sites about dreadlocks theres 2 main sites that come up high in google that are absolute scams and cause severe harm yet they control the reviews by having thousandsof clone sites and deleyting anything negative
my sites got a dreadheadhq and knottyboy bad dread products real reviews page where ppl can post actual experiences and its come up high in google and in 3 years has made an 80% drop in people harmed by thier worse products

so paying attention to the bad reviews sometimes can be very helpful (especialy when u see that all actual good reviews were fronm 15 year olds in thier 1st weeks of using the crap before they could realize how horible it was)

i always read both the good and the bad
i pay attention to the percebtages of good and bad and try to get an overall experiences idea

Have you got a Ning archive to import? If so, upload it to your new Jamroom site into a folder called 'Ning_Archive' in the Jamroom root folder then let us have your FTP and JR logins. We'll then upload the modules for you to import Ning and play with.

If you want to move from Ning to JR, then make sure its a most recent archive of the Ning site.

How do I get the NingJa skin/template. Do I need email my ftp details?

Paul I have a 2.0 archive to upload. Just confused on 'where' to upload it. You said "upload it to a folder" but I don't see where one does this. Under the Ning upload 'tools' one checks what will be imported but no place to attach the files. It's confusing to novice eyes.......one would expect an button there to attach and upload. Merely give you this as feedback.

NOTE - I'm still running behind. My label has an album release this friday - premiere on SomaFM and all that - so been busy getting that buttoned up.

I do plan to sign up for a month to month with Arvixe - and ftp up my Ning archive. If that all works out then I'll go to pay by year plan.

I'm a little confused on modules needed, but that's because I haven't read carefully yet. Thanks for all the answered questions so far. I'm following along with everyone else's issues and thoughts as I can.

SE you assume I know anything a/b Filezilla, servers and such. Nope. Nada. Zip. Just as most Ning NC's won't either. LOL I'll look for someone instructional videos once the stock market closes (my main job) and keep plugging along. I'm making a step-by-step list for Ning smidiots just like me b/c I can guarantee you - as it stands, they'd run for the hills. lol

Have just tested and am not seeing any issues. Most likely this is just a very active thread, and if you're actively participating in it while also "watching" it you're going to get a lot of notices. Note that the forum will only send you ONE notice of any updates - that gets "reset" when you visit the thread again, which is why you're likely getting a lot of email.

Toggle the "watch this thread" option OFF at the top while you're actively participating.

Hope this helps!

I just painted my self into a corner...

I created a new account on Arvixe. Did not transfer my domain as it's up and running on another host and I'm not ready to move that site yet. However... all the default links go back to the main domain. Seems I can't run under a temp name.

I may have to think about this a bit on how to get around it. I need to build under an alternate name and then shift it over... or get the old site moved - switch and then build Jamroom.

Looks like you are already in the "VIP Member" subscription, so you should be able to purchase the bundle directly from within your Marketplace in your Jamroom:

ACP -> Marketplace -> Bundles tab

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks!

I'd recommend setting up a separate hostname (i.e. jameoom.yourdomain.com) and just point that host to the Arvixe server. We've noticed that Jamroom will not function properly on Arvixe WITHOUT a valid domain - i.e. you can't use just the "username" URL they give you for the cpanel.

Hope this helps!

it's in the green box. take those TWO values and go to your Jamroom -> ACP -> Marketplace -> Tools -> Marketplace Systems and click on "Modify" to the right of the Jamroom Network. Put the Marketplace Email there and the Marketplace System ID there and save. DO NOT change the other 2 values.

If you are having difficulty installing the Jamroon 5 core, I believe that Jamroom support can do this for you.

Ignore all the Ning modules at this point (except the importer) - I will have new versions out ASAP (hopefully next 2-3 days) that should work like you are familiar to them working. Right now things are not likely to work like you would expect.

While I'd love to say "Jamroom is 100% made for everyone", I'd be lying. To run your own Jamroom site you're going to need to be at least a little bit technically familiar with running your own website, including:

- using FTP to upload and download files to your server
- managing your site
- understanding the basics of HTML and CSS (this is very helpful)

If those things are areas you're not familiar with or comfortable with, you'll be best suited by sticking with Ning or another SAAS system where they do all the hosting, configuration, customization, etc. for you.

Hope this helps!

Groups are only listed after they've been commented on and then by the number of comments they have. That is the skins definition of 'Top Groups'.

can you type/ or copy paste? or click a button?
can you figure out how to tight click in under 8 hours without having to switch hands? (srry an actual tech support nightmare i had once it took me 8 hiurs to get her to right click the desktop and she had to use her other hand to figure it out)

ftp is so easy
if youve moved files from 1 folder on your psc to another then you can ftp
all your doing is moving files from 1 folder to another it just happens to be in a server

off topic but i looked into your recomended hosting just cause of my importing issues
the cloud servers were afordable but had a max of 300 g drive and when i asked if they canb upgrade that they said "we can add another 15 gigs" 15? that could be filled in hours
i looked into the dedicated servers then
at 1/4 the power i got niw they were like 3 times the price well 4 times really cause that was without the added options i got
oh
and wheni tried to call them it took 4 hours to get through

i mighgt be havina lil import issues probly due to some server config or other but the price and service i get..and the drasticly more powerful server...
i just couldnt imagine spending 500 dollars for far less then what i got jnow andto get what i got now (base price without the addons was likr 179 i think) would cost me like 700 or so at a guess through your guys

and if it took 4 hours to answer the phone in an emergency if the server went down or anything ...just not worth the hassle and expense

Alrightee have my 2.0 files copied over to the server. Went to Ning import, set the global config and went to tools. Only checked the first box (to see how it went) and received this error.

"jrComment module inactive - Abandon import"

Does this mean I must purchase the "user comments" module in order to proceed or lost the comments in my archive?

Nothing will be lost from your Archive, it just won't be imported in to the new site if you don't have the corresponding Jamroom module(s) - i.e. Audio, Video, Comments, etc.

Hope this helps!

The same error pops up no matter what I try to import so it seems nothing is importing at all. Even w/o comments attached.

I apologize, but I haven't done an actual import yet, but is it the same error message about comments?

Thanks!

The only restriction on those items is that the user must be logged in - so as long as the user is logged in they should see them in the site header.

Hope this helps!

SE, This is the "top menu" not the modules - quotas are set to "allow" on all users quotas - they are visible on user pages.

hes right they only show for admnins but they need to be visibole to all including logged out unless you want a private network

on the ning skin maybe there should be a maunj m enu tamb in the skin editor that alows you to set visibility for each item by quota wether that be all including logged out admins members poweer users or any other quota u defined and btw i see theres quota groups can u define groups and assign quotas to them the way you would as a net admin

Brian, yes I was receiving the same error message within seconds for all imports but at Ning, we tend to have comments on just about every page so I can see why that was a red flag.

It's going to be very unnerving for Creators to come and 'test the waters' here unless ya'll roll out a 14 day free trial with all (basic) modules included. Blog, forum, photo, video, comments.

They'll never be able to test layouts and get a feel for design possibilities w/o them.....much less import. Is this (14day trial) something you have planned?

Would it be possible to add "pages" to the top menu (Page Creator pages, not NPages). As that appears to be missing.

Thank you.

This is what Paul has done for everyone who he has worked with so far - for those that want to attempt it on their own we don't currently have any way to offer "free trials" on any modules. Definitely something we can look into though.

Thanks!

Profiles and Users are 2 different things in Jamroom. This is because Jamroom has the ability to have multiple Users on a single profile, and multiple profiles tied to a single user. Now if the user uploads a Profile pic, but no user pic, the profile pic will be used - I don't think it goes the other direction as well, but I can check.

Thanks!

but the thing is in the elastic skin in the slider i saw all the profile pics
in ning skin i see the profile pics in the profiles
but in the profile list when clicking the link i see just the default pifc for every 1

That's odd. My discussions were importing and about mid-way through, I received an error that there was trouble connecting to the server however there's no way to re-connect nor "X" out of the box. I clicked "ok" and it's just sitting there with a wheel spinning. Should I just close out the tab and re-open/start over again?

right click reload and start it again
fdid it say json error
the ning archives suck
theres alotta errors and the importwers managing to handle them but to avoid an infinate loop after 10 errors it alerts you and you have to refresh the page and start again it will go through the ones that are there already then pick up where it left off
turn off error reporting so its fasster

Just to say that we are regularly encountering this error on the activity when clicking links within it.

"CRI: Unable to copy modules/jrProfile/templates/item_detail.tpl to template cache directory: data/cache/jrCore"

This concerns member/user profile links.

run the system check
make sure the servers configured corectly
run the integrity check
if the integrity check causes the oages to not oload cirectly like mine did go into phpmyadmin on the se4rver on left search setting
clich the jcore_setting control f t9o search page type skin
whenu find the line saying soimething like jrcore_skin colicik edit copy tyhe default skin name paste over the active skin name scroll dowen click go
replad yo8ur page then re enable your skin

you really should have cloned the skin b4 working on it so youd always have the default version to compare to or fall back on in an emergency

in fact if your not really a coder it might not be a bad idea to clone b4 every major change that way you havge a revision history to fall back on like ning kept forner versions of your theme everytime u published
cloning would do the same thintg just adda version number after the name each time

go to developer tools in tools
if you dont have that module..get it its a must have

its free
click tools, clone skin
give it a name
something unique but identifiable to the original skin

examples i cloned elastic into fantastalastic slate into greatslate and ning into ningbling

now in ftp its easy to find what css to play with
you enable the cloned skin so its active any edits to the templates are edits to the clone

so if you want to try something that your unsure of you can clone say ningbling to ningbling1 it will clone all ningblings edits alow u to edit ningbling1 if u screw up just enablwe ningbling agvain u can therefore keep a version history
only really worthwhile for major revisions i mean your not going to want a new clone everytime u change a element color or font size but if your making major template changes and want a safety backup just create a new version to work with

Brian alrightee, I'm fiddling with skins and altering css/html although I have a question. I truly want to use a Ning skin so I am truly documenting this process specifically for Ning Creators. One problem - I cut up my credit cards 10 years ago! LOL I see that you do not accept PayPal for such a small $7 purchase. Since I'm simply testing being a 'guinea pig' here (not going live), is there any way you could provide me with the Ning skin for this temporary situation? http://team1.legalisecannabis.org/

We accept PayPal for any amount - is there somewhere you saw that it said we didn't? I'd like to check that out.

I can add the skin license to your account no problem.

Thanks!

when you buty through the jr marketplace the bundles u pay for the full bundle inckluding stuff you already paid for!
if u buy through your sites marketplace u only pay for the peice of the bundle not installed...but then u have to use as cc

i spent i have no idea how much but over 300 and agood number of the modules in the bundles wsere already installed so i paid for ones i didnt need to pay for

Yeah - unfortunately the PayPal side of things is NOT setup the same as the Stripe side (and has made me think on several times it might be time to just remove the PayPal option).

If you can contact me at support [at] jamroom [dot] net I can refund you for any modules you had already purchased.

Hope this helps!
