Arvixe

I set up a new arvixe account under the shared pro level.

I'm seeing a 13.40 5min load and an 88% usage on a 2TB drive with 1 cpu. It's sluggish based on my experience with other jamroom systems I run:

Compared to 0.47 5 min load at bluehost (55% usage, 32 cpu's) and 1.23 at jbservers (41% usage, 1 cpu).

I followed jamroom's recommended hosting link and hoped for something better than what I was getting. But, at least today, it's much, much worse.

Is it really though? Does it feel slugish or is it just the data readings.

Brian said something about that on a thread talking with arvixe:
brian: One thing I have noticed is that it shows the server only having 1 CPU - the server I did my testing on had 32 CPUs. Is the "crab" server an older server? If not any ideas why /proc/cpuinfo only shows 1 CPU?

arvixe: All our servers through have 24+ cores, what you are seeing is what the account is limited to (we are still tweaking CloudLinux for optimal performance). As for the load it is relative to the total cores not the account so a load of 15 is not very high (with 24 cores). The stats you see in the account are for that user directly.

brian: I agree - a load of 15 on a 24 proc box is no biggie. I'll have to check out our CPU load utility function and see if I can detect that it is on a virtual CPU and adjust it so we don't get a false reading.

I have jamroom systems on 3 different hosts. jbservers is consistently more sluggish than bluehost. jbservers will hang for long periods and be essentially unusable. bluehost is generally OK, but occasionally drops data connections. Arvixe was not feeling particularly snappy and then started to hang like jbservers so I checked the dashboard.

So far, I'm less than thrilled. The signup process was also not without its bugs. The button to select no new domain produced an error.

If you guys feel good about having vetted their service then I guess I'll see how it goes and hope it feels better moving forward.

Hi blindmime,
I am very sorry to hear that you have had issues with our service's (Arvixe). We have worked with Jamroom to make sure that we are providing a good service for everyone. If you wouldn't mind e-mailing me your details as I would like to get to the bottom of this issue(s). You can send them to noah [at] arvixe {.} com.
Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback here Blindmime - I've been working with Noah on making sure things work well for Jamroom. I know they have been working on some updates to their shared servers in regards to "virtual CPUs" (or I believe that is what it is called). This means that Jamroom's "load" indicator may not be correct as it will show 1 CPU instead of the actual number of physical CPU's on the system, but the load numbers will be for all CPUs.

So in other words, if the load is 5.00 on a single CPU server, that's a high load - on a 24 or 32 processor system it is not.

So just an FYI that this may not be the case here, but wanted to let you know, and I'm hoping to get this working correctly in the dashboard if I can.

Thanks!

Hi blindmime,

I haven't encountered any issues since last weekend, other than the FTP issue I noted in my email where if it's inactive for even short periods and then I try to upload something or change a directory or whatever, Filezilla will hang for like 30 seconds and then return a disconnected message, then I can start uploading. I think it's timeout setting on your end, but I could be mistaken.

Thank you for following up. If I decide to move up to a VPS, do you prorate my current plan?

If anyone else wants to feel a site on a shared arvixe server, you're welcome to visit http://tapegerm.com -- judging from this thread they are very responsive to the needs of the jamroom community.

Hi Blindmine,

Yes we will. Any plan purchased through Arvixe will be prorated when there is an upgrade. I will also be making sure that your FTP issue is followed up on.

The FTP timing out issue has returned.

I am also experiencing a lot of upload errors via the website (not FTP). It happens in different jamroom modules. It's happened when uploading small profile images and it's happened when uploading files via jrFile and elsewhere.

It actually happens more often than not and I have to initiate an upload many times before it's successful. It varies. I've tried uploads upwards of a dozen or more times before being successful.

I have not encountered this on other hosts where I have jamroom installed. Jamroom is not useful under these conditions.

Hi Blindmime,

I have our techs looking to see what happened with the FTP and did send you a follow up e-mail yesterday to see what the actual error code was. Thanks.

@blindmine, are you seeing any javascript errors in the console when the uploads are failing? Anything in the error_log | activity log | debug log?

Thanks.

I'm not seeing anything unusual in the activity log. Nothing in debug log. I have a long list of errors in the php error log. Not sure what I should be looking for there. I see out of memory errors earlier in the log, like three in succession but nothing afterwards. On Sunday I see a variety of errors. Stuff like undefined offset errors in gallery.php, errors in stream_copy_to_stream(), filemtime(), a few others. Nothing consistently repeated.

While upload errors were occurring often on Sunday (several dozen), I've uploaded probably twenty or so things since then without issue.

I believe the module parameter is wrong too...

module="jrCore_image"

there is no such module unless they created one named jrCore_image...

Good catch doug. ^^.

and looking at it further, there is no item id either, so the image display function is not going to know what image to display. It needs an item_id=12 or whatever number you want to display.

I'm aware of the ones that are not server issues. I've been coding templates. Arvixe requested the log so I sent them the whole log, which does include many other entries, some of which, I'm guessing, are server related.

I sent these to ARVIXE PRIVATELY via email so they could troubleshoot the upload errors I've been getting. I did not post my server logs publicly in this forum.

Do you think it's a great idea to be posting my server logs unedited to a public forum without my permission?

I don't.

Please delete them immediately.

Don't get me wrong. I really appreciate all the help you guys go out of your way to give me. You're all great.

I don't mind Arvixe sharing it privately with the jamroom team in order to address their server issues. I just don't feel good about private email being made public.

Noah from Arvixe contact us asking for help, and let us now the errors you were seeing in your error_log. However, I agree with you that it should not be posted here, as it contains directory information about your server.

I've removed it from Michael's post - sorry about that being posted in the first place.

Today, the site was responding very slowly. Then, the mysql server went down and my site is completely inaccessible: CRI: Error connecting to MySQL Server: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) (#2002) - the site owner should contact their hosting provider for assistance.

Getting tired of this.

That's the first time I've seen the connection error. The site was down for some time after that. It's been sluggish now since then. It seems things were getting better. The dashboard showed 16 cpu's and a 5-minute load under 1 for a few weeks, so I was feeling OK. Even purchased another domain through them as I like their simple interface (Moniker has gotten way too complicated recently). But then it went back to being poor (this is what I'm tired of, the up and down inconsistency and never being able to rely on service). The load has been back up to over 3 for several days and the drive capacity is back up to 95%.

Hi Blindmime,

I updated the e-mail you sent me. Unfortunately I was out when it occurred. Please update me and we can work on getting any issues current or past resolved.

The drive is 2TB and we keep a close eye on it to make sure it does not reach a limit that would make it unusable. I can't make a comment on the load (as it is low now) but if you were using your control panel to view it, it is suppose to show your usage not the server.

Can you update your post so that it doesn't have the table information in it (it shows your user name) or if a moderator sees this can they? I was able to locate your account and see that a tech has recently updated your ticket. I will be e-mailing you for more information.
