How Do Members Switch Quotas?

Ning To Jamroom

This is something I just accidentally stumbled on, by logging in as one of my members.

They are in the default Ning Migrant quota. If they want to subscribe to a paid quota that's no problem.

However, if they want to switch to either a free member or free artist quota they don't have that option.

If I make it a subscription option, then they have to enter their credit card info and pay a repeating subscription of $0. which makes no sense.

If I don't make it a subscription option, there doesn't seen to be a way of letting them make that choice.

Also, how can they get a default pop-out message (help tip) on log-ins. One that tells them to choose one of the free or subscribed quotas, and links them to the selection page?

How to Create a "Sandbox Site" for Experiments

Jamroom Hosting

I went to my cpanel and created a database and then a subdomain. Then I installed Jamroom into the subdomain at http://sandbox.indiegospel.net It was easy and could be done in 10 minutes.

The only issue I had was with the .htacess file. Apparently it has some values which don't work with the particular server I am on, even though the server meets Jamroom requirements.

So these two values had to be deleted (AddHandler php5-fastcgi.php Actionphp5-fastcgi /cgi-bin/php.fcgi)

To keep it simple, if you just copy the setting of the .htacess file in your working site, you should be fine, no matter what server you are on.

Now I can experiment with skins and modules without affecting my live system. I just hide it behind a maintenance screen and no one can see my trial and error mistakes.

Internal Server Error - jrCore/router.php on line 305

Using Jamroom

My server guy said he had to remove these two files from the .htacess file.

I'm not sure how that effects the script or why he would need to do that. Is there a help file? I went back over the install instructions and didn't see anything about this.

AddHandler php5-fastcgi .php
Action php5-fastcgi /cgi-bin/php.fcgi

===============================================

The server meets Jamroom requirements, but I'm not sure if it has this recommended extension. APC (op code caching - speeds up PHP)

If not, perhaps the help file should be updated to say "you may have to disable those two .htacess values if this extension is not installed"???

jr Embed Feature Request

Suggestions

Hi Brian,

I've had it set that way for awhile. That's not the feature request I was trying to communicate.

If you are set that way (as I am) it's hard for the member to find his own content, or to find specific content, without sifting through reams and reams of pages.

With the global setting the other way, the member can find their own content easily (because that's all there is) but can't access anyone else's.

What I was suggesting is, instead of a global setting, a profile level setting controlled by the user right inside the editor. His own content when checked, all content when not.

Or list his own first by default, then everyone else's. A search box would also be helpful for finding specific content.

Internal Server Error - jrCore/router.php on line 305

Using Jamroom

Hi - Just set-up a "sandbox" site on a subdomain to try and retheme the new Ningja skin.

It was running OK for awhile but now all I get is an internal server error and when I check the log it indicates a missing buffer?

Does anyone know what could be causing this?
========================================================

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete
your request.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

jr Embed Feature Request

Suggestions

Hi Michael,

I guess my suggestion could be reworded that way. A user friendly search box built into it might be a way to go.

Whether a checkbox for two modes, or a search window type of approach, it's really only going to be practical for users, if that code level functionality is made simplistic.

Most users are not going to be tracking down ID's, or working with codes, but if they could type in another members name (for instance) and see that member's content indexed, something like that would be useful. Or type in song - title and only those songs that match the word(s) are indexed.

Just throwing that out there - might be impossible - I have no idea how to code stuff.

Thanks

I don't have any idea how easy or hard this would be to implement, but instead of a global control, it sure would be swell if the user could select either their own content, or everyone's, to be listed.

Then on a big site with lot's of content, he could bring up only his own stuff to browse through - default. If the post is not about himself, he could check a box in the tools pop out screen, to search for everyone's.

The "Critically Important" Profile Landing Page

Ning To Jamroom

Hi Brian,

Yes, it can get cluttered - no doubt it's a "niche" thing.

I actually push the timeline bottom left on my personal page and shorten it, because it's not that important to me.

There is something to be said for simplicity - it wouldn't hurt to be a little bit sparing in the profile index, not to "junk it up" too much.

Perhaps a compromise between looking empty and looking too cluttered (as I agree Ning tends to be, if everything is enabled)

The "Critically Important" Profile Landing Page

Ning To Jamroom

Strumelia:

The point is that a sampling of all these things is right there, on my single personal page. They are not 'hidden' so you can only see them by clicking on a TAB. Thus the person's personal "profile profile page" does not look empty when you go to check the person out on the site.

Your network is private so he will not see without taking time to join. This link is a public profile page I built for a friend - http://indiegospel.org/profile/ReyPerez

I like how you state that - it looks "empty" - lol.

As I was saying, like some kind of "glaring omission". It's funny because it is so "painfully obvious" to us, but I've had to work hard to make this point, I even wrote Brian privately. Michael also missed it the first time around.

Finally, the "lights came on", so I'm happy Brian sees where we are coming from now. It means a solution is inevitable and likely to be "the bomb".

There's only one big functionality issue left now, and that's the featuring. Douglas already has a solution for the Nova skin, so it's only a matter of him re-coding it for Ningja (and there's already a ticket in on it).
