I think threads are necessary to have a vibrant discussion that is allowed to spiral in different direction. good to know that the current threads will be lost. I'll try to get my users to adjust there expectations.

It seems like the Discussion is closest to the Ning forums as those are threaded. can someone link to an example?

out of curiosity why doesn't the Forum module allow for threaded comments?

I am a bit confused about this as there are three different modules that have similar functionality. Could someone post examples of each? I haven't attempted to migrate yet, though at some point I'll set up a test site to figure it out. In my ning site we have a Forum with several categories which works for us.
