Users recorded as following a profile, but they have not followed.

Using Jamroom

I feel that's very unlikely, Brian. I don't see any benefit to a user to have people following them, not on our site, anyway. I don't know if it is only this user - I only discovered it because someone raised a ticket about a Timeline action that they knew they hadn't performed.

If you'd like to see on pmp-art, this is the link for user "J" http://pmp-art.com/janina-suuronen/follow
I notice that the last 3 followers are awaiting approval. That's new.
I must point out that this person has said she has terminal cancer, so I haven't corresponded with her at all about this issue. If it does turn out to be some kind of manipulation, I would just let it go.

Users recorded as following a profile, but they have not followed.

Using Jamroom

This is very weird, and I'd like to know if it's happened on any other site.

12th November, one of our users noticed an entry on her Timeline saying that she had followed user 'J'; an action she had not done. In fact she was not logged in at the time given.

I looked at user J's Followers list: J suddenly acquired 149 followers that day. No-one ever gets near that number of followers on a given day - it's usually between zero and 2. Some of these followers have not logged in for weeks and have no other activity on the site; I have to assume that they didn't really follow. I have checked with 3 of that day's followers, who tell me they have not followed J.

User J has turned off notifications for followers, so I can't check email alerts for any of these follow actions. J appears in 'People You Follow' on each of these users, and all of these users are listed in J's followers.
I can't see any connection between the followers who didn't actually follow.

Any ideas how this could happen? Or anything else I can check to see what the reason is?

Some users Notification settings being reset to all OFF...?

Using Jamroom

I opened a support ticket for this problem (Notifications all being set to OFF), before I saw this forum.

We have had this happen numerous times over at least 2 months (maybe longer - I always dismissed reports as being due to clicking the unsubscribe).

I really don't think it is the unsubscribe link. This has happened to some of our most active, long-time members, even including the site owner, and all are well aware of the unsubscribe link. Some members have had it happen two or three times recently, so even if it was an accidental unsubscribe initially, I can't imagine they'd do it repeatedly, especially having been through the process of resetting all their notifications. The pop-up confirmation says "Ooops Set my notifications back to the way they were" and you click that and it works correctly, so it's quite unambiguous.

We have Kickbox, but I've passed the relevant emails through the Kickbox validation and they all validate without any problem. I've checked mailgun logs for those addresses, and nothing has been flagged as an error - notifications stop being generated by our site.

For testing purposes, @Brian has put in a log entry on our site for when someone clicks the unsubscribe. I'm just waiting for the next report of notifications all turned off. Obviously, it takes time for people to realise it's happened. It just goes quiet for a couple of days.

Should 'Reply to a comment' generate a notification?

Using Jamroom

brian:
The only alternative in that case would be to email every user that commented on the item (since as far as JR can tell it could be a response to ANY comment).

Let me know if that helps.

As it happens, that's what Ning used to do. You had to 'un-follow' the item if you didn't want notifications whenever anyone else commented. It was very unsatisfactory.

If you can identify a 'reply' in a comment thread, (or provide a "comment back" on un-threaded comments) and get a notification to the originator, that would be infinitely better than the Ning system.

Should 'Reply to a comment' generate a notification?

Using Jamroom

Strumelia:
lornawebber:
@strumelia - this is what it looks like on our site..

Lorna, just an aside so you know, since we were discussing this in the other thread-
I believe I don't have the "reply" options on my site because I do not have "enable threading" checked for my Comments module. On my site, I prefer instead to have a "comment back" button for profile page comments. That's why your and my site are a little different in regards to quotes/replies/comments etc, and it's why we are inquiring about different feature options. :)

Thanks for your very full response, @Brian.
When I referred to 'comment back', I meant the system that @strumelia mentioned in her comment above. I assumed that's what you get if you don't enable threading, but I now realise that is probably a new feature that Strumelia is asking for.

Basically, we both would like people to be notified when someone responds to their comment. For me it would be the notification when someone "replies", so I'm glad you have a ticket for that. For anyone who hasn't enabled threading, it would be a "comment back" button (hope that's right, @strumelia).

Reports of Search not working and failure to navigate site

Using Jamroom

I've tried all sorts of search terms, including things that might be in the image gallery; profile names with and without quotes; things that might be in the documentation. Never any results shown just the site header and a grey screen.
These terms should all have results...

The url of the return screen for all these searches is http://pmp-art.com/search/results/all/1/4

Apparently it used to work. I hardly ever use the Search tab; I usually go to Images or Profiles, so I didn't notice this until it was raised as a PMP ticket today.

Remember me cookie problems

Using Jamroom

We have had some similar complaints recently. Users get very grouchy about this. Our instances seemed to result from updating IE. Chrome works fine.

I have found a convincing Microsoft forum which says that IE 10 and 11 use different cookie handling to IE9. While IE9 keeps you logged in, with IE10 & 11 you get logged out after a variable number of hours.
After extensive testing it appears that this is due to Symantec Endpoint protection and Symantec Norton Antivirus which delete the session cookies at time of scan.

Reports of Search not working and failure to navigate site

Using Jamroom

It turns out that rather than going to the Images or Profiles tabs on the main menu and then using the search box, they are using the Search tab on the main menu. This does not return any results as far as I can see.
