Log out best practice?

Using Jamroom

Thanks.

I can see my website top page, and the options to login or ceate account.

When I try to create a testuser account with a different email address and password, the screen makes no response, just the same as the login screen.

Maybe that helps to identify the problem. My browser is active, as I am using the same browser to send this message.

Log out best practice?

Using Jamroom

When I left the office in a hurry tonight, I left my computer on and logged in to my new Jamroom site. I have a nagging feeling that both actions are bad paractice for a variety of reasons. What are the possible consequences, and in particular, what does the Jamroom server system think about owners who leave it hanging on?

The question arises because now I am at home, trying to log in to my Jamroom site. Despite refreshing my browser, and rebooting the entire Jamroom server through the hosting dashboard, I still cannot log in to the Jamroom site (publishscience.net).

Maybe this log in issue has nothing to do with leaving the computer at work logged in. I don't have any issue like this with my Ning site.

Does Jamroom have any instructions anywhere on the necessity or otherwise of logging out? Do different computer systems react differently when left hanging like this? Are there settings that should be tweaked to control how Jamroom reacts?

"Jamroom Lists" -- and access to the JR Glossary

Suggestions

Thanks.

What I need as a social network imagineer is a better sense of what these modules can do - how they can be used by members (users) of a network.

Here's the picture I have at present...

One module = engine that powers certain functions for an entire website under a particular domain name. Each module has a datastore that records all information relevant to all users of the module.

From the social network perspective, how do we bring members (users) and modules together? Like this?...

1. One member (user) -> can have one or more accounts (profiles) in one or more profile categories (Can one login be used for all profile categories used by one living breathing person?)

2. Multiple modules --> are assigned to each profile category (each thus has a 'quota' of modules assigned to it).

3. One module --> can contribute to (or be accessed by) multiple profile categories.

I still have not pushed enough buttons in the ACP to see how to connect all the parts together and produce a public page that people can see.

For educational purposes, a simple visual map (hand-drawn sketch?) of how the parts are all connected (and controlled) would be useful.

Maybe it already exists somewhere on Jamroom.net!

"Jamroom Lists" -- and access to the JR Glossary

Suggestions

Michael,

Here's another. I was looking at "Seamless" Module description in my (internal) server dashboard, and found the phrase "DataStore items" which has something to do with lists and storing data... but what specfically is DataStore? A place, thing, widget, or action? Verb or noun?

Does every site have one, whatever it is?

If my site doesn't have one, how do I get it?

Do I need it?

Cheers, P.

Admin Control Panel (ACP) - where should I look for it?

Jamroom Help

I've noticed that other users have asked this question, and have been told that there is a link to the ACP on every page (of the Jamroom.net account I suppose). But I don't see this, and don't see any link to an ACP from inside the Server Dashboard system.

Please advise. Thanks.

Jamroom Hosting is now live for everyone!

Jamroom Hosting

I followed the link, looked again, but no button there. It should be above the Timeline tab I suppose, but it's not there.

"Jamroom Lists" -- and access to the JR Glossary

Suggestions

While scoping features of the Site Builder thingy I came across this item:

"The Site Builder - Construction Kit module lets you create custom Jamroom Lists (like jrCore_list) inside of a widget."

That's a fine feature I am sure, but since I never had a jrCore_List, I certainly do not know what a Jamroom List might be. Is it something I will want to use or buy?

For every page on which JR-specific or other special terms are explained in the Glossary, it would be nice to have a standard button providing a shortcut to the glossary. Or the Glossary could be a subtab in the Main Support menu at the top of every page.

Jamroom Hosting is now live for everyone!

Jamroom Hosting

I have just now purchased the Ning to JR package, am still logged in to JR. Now I would like to purchase hosting at Jamroom, but have not yet found that orange button shown in the screen shot with the hosting anouncement.

I will keep scrolling about lookng for a purchase link, but if that fails will contact JR support directly.

It seems odd that this should be so hard to find. I would expect something this major (hosting) to have its own tab in the main menu of the JR website.

Multiple forums

Ning To Jamroom

My Ning 2.0 network is not a commercial site in itself, but has forums (A) for offers and requests for many kinds of service, and (B) for specific topics, inside topic-focus groups.

All the forums of the A type are aggregated into one page of text with active links to each kind of offer or request:

Editing Offers Requests
Translation Offers Requests

etc.

Any member of the network can use these forums without any further joining process, while only members who have joined a group can post to the forum in that group (though anyone can see the forum).

It is not clear to me if and how multiple forums can be set up and managed in Jamroom. Is there a specific page of advice on the matter that we can be directed to?

Thanks, Peter

Feature request - Finding active ex-Ning members (Still) in default quota

Using Jamroom

Dear Michael,

Thanks for that (good to see the Glossary), but the explanation for quota is still not understandable to me!

In my experience with online networks, profiles belong to people, groups or organisations, i.e. members of a network. I understand that members have access to fixed amounts (quotas) of one or more things. These could be things like storage space in the network, number of questions they can ask Jamroom support in a given period, number of videos they can upload with a video module, number of photos they can upload in photo module, or number of modules they can have access to through their profile, or according to the membership status.

Quotas generally refer to predetermined quantities that are produced or used or consumed.

If different members are given access to different modules (i.e. if not all members are equal), then it would be understandable to say that they have different "module access rights", or "module access privileges", based on the aims of the network and how it is managed.

To say that "a profile can only belong to 1 quota at a time" makes no sense in human terms, from the user (profile owner) perspective.

If the number of fish I am allowed to catch is 100 in one day, I do not belong to the quota, the quota belongs to me. That is my quota to use or not use, as I wish or need or can.

Cheers, Peter

*****

From the glossary

Quota
Refers to the grouping system within Jamroom that allocates what resources are available to use for profiles.

Each profile can only belong to 1 quota at a time. The modules each have a "Quota Config" tab to allow the admin to set which quotas can use the module.

eg:
* Only users in the "Quota Name Here" Quota can use the Blog module.
* Users who pay for a subscription move to the "Paid Members Quota" and get to use these extra modules....
