How can I "like" an item in JR.net?

Using Jamroom

I want to 'like' the Glossary so I can easily find it in the "Items You Like' subtab in my JR menu.

Currently I have to do a site-wide search on 'Glossary' every time I need to look up a term, or to check if a term has already been added.

When I am on the Glossary page, all I can see are buttons for sharing.

Guestbook

Using Jamroom

Further ?bug report... I have guestbook installed and showing on one of my profile pages.

I left a test message there, and received the following notification by email:

Publish Science Network has just signed your guestbook!

You can view their entry here:

http://my-site.jamroomhosting.com/my-site/guestbook

When I went to that link, the guest book looks empty, and has a note saying "No entries yet - Be the first"

I thought I was first, but the first shall be last... so I seem to be caught inside a biblical injunction with no escape. Please advise.

Thanks,

Who determines when a profile is active or not active? (and related questions)

Using Jamroom

SteveX:
Why don't you try signing up to your own system? At least you would then know how your system works when handling signups.

Thanks. I have done that in the past, but as the system changes, I should delete my current test-user account, and the then sign up again to create a new test-user and see what happens (I have a limited number of email addresses, so this will be easier than setting up new email accounts to create new test users).

Also, I need independent test users who will arrive at the network with no prior knowledge at all, and who can then give me feedback on the overall experience, including sign up.

In any case, thanks for all the answers so far. This all helps make it easier to understand how the jr system works.

Trial and error is a good way to learn, of course, but is time consuming. Having guidance in advance is useful, and the present question and answer (Q&A) forums are steadily adding such guidance.

Who determines when a profile is active or not active? (and related questions)

Using Jamroom

I am not sure exactly.

The system is letting them sign-up, but none of them created active profiles.

I do not know if this because they couldn't (no option given?), or because they did not see or understand the 'profile active' checkbox.

Does checking the 'profile active' checkbox represent the 'approval' process in Jamroom?

If so, then I might eventually change the form language to "approve profile" rather than "profile active".

Thanks

Who determines when a profile is active or not active? (and related questions)

Using Jamroom

Today I saw actual people join my Jamroom network for the first time. But I cannot seem them in the page that displays all profiles. I can only see them in the ACP Profile Browser.

In each case, I see this message "This profile is not active and is only visible to admin users and the site owner".

This does not tell me why the profile is not active. Questions arise...

1. Is it because each new member chose not to make his or her profile active?

2. Is it because new members cannot make their profiles active themselves?

When I look at the profile description, there is a check box where I (as site owner and admin) can make the profile active.

3. Is me the checking this box the only way to make a new profile active, and visible to the public?

4. In the Global Configuration panel for profiles, I do not see any option to make all new profiles active on sign-up, by default. Nor is there any option of this sort in the Quota set up (as far as I have seen).

For me, not having such a default option is not a problem. I want the chance to see and approve each profile before it becomes public. But...

5. What does the newly signed-up, potential member see?

6. Is there an automatic message telling the new member that his or her profile is not active, and that it will be reviewed for approval by the site owner or administrator?

If not, how can I set up an automatic message:

7. ...for newly signed up members who have not yet been approved? (an approval pending message)?

8. ...for newly approved members (telling them what further steps they can take, now that their membership is approved?

9. Is there any way for the new member to send a message to the site owner or administrator to ask about the sign-up process?

Thanks

What exists before we add "additional search fields" in the search module?

Using Jamroom

Thanks for all that.

What exists before we add "additional search fields" in the search module?

Using Jamroom

For the profile module, the default fields are profile_image and profile_name. Only the latter has searchable text, so what counts for the default, site-wide jr search is the profile_name field (I presume).

To build a search box that digs into new fields added to a profile form, does it matter if the added profile fields are in the Create section or Settings section? I presume all that matters is the label given to the form field.

Why is the Settings section called Settings and not Update?

In the profile form design tool, it seems that new Create fields cannot be automatically added to the Settings fields, but we can give them the same name manually.... e.g. profile_country. But then the way profile_country is set up in the Create section may be different than the way it is set up in the Settings section, so the search system may not be seeing the same data each time. Does the Settings section overwrite the Create section in the same way as an Update form?

Is the "Settings" section effectively the same thing as an "Update" section, but without the option of automatically synchronising the two sections?

Thanks

In principle, can we place multiple search boxes on a single page using widget panels?

Using Jamroom

I have tried to place multiple search boxes on a single page using widget panels.

http://publishsciencenet.jamroomhosting.com/psn-search-central/

I tried to follow the instructions in the documentaion on "how to add a search box in a widget":

https://www.jamroom.net/site-builder/documentation/howto/2391/how-to-add-a-search-box-in-a-widget

I do not get any results from any of the three search boxes installed. Perhaps the indexing has not started at my site, though I have activated full-text searching in the search module.

My first concern though is that the search boxes do not operate independently. Whichever search box it is that I use, of the three installed on my search page, the search action loop spins next to the upper left box, and then the "reset" term appears on all three search boxes.

I suspect I face multiple technical problems here, but my first question is general:

In principle, can we place multiple, different and independent search boxes on a single page using widget panels?

If yes, then I will be happy to ask a freelanceer to set this up for me, eventually, if the technicalities are too much for me.

My aim is to have a single "Search Central" page where visitors can explore the network in multiple ways from a single location.

Thanks

Using Jamroom

When we look at jrSearch module in ACP, we can see a field for

"additional search fields"

Additional to what?

If we do not add any custom search fields, what will be searched?

How exactly does "Enable Full Text Search" work?

Using Jamroom

Thanks for the screenshot. That all shows up in my case too, so no problem there. And now I understand how the ACP search box has been set up.

This ability to configure search boxes for any combination of areas within a jr Network will indeed be very useful for me.
