Shifted profile from one quota to another and it disappeared

Using Jamroom

Hi. Earlier today Michael brought my "Indexing" profile back into view at its usual URL:

http://publishsciencenet.jamroomhosting.com/indexing

To check why it may have disappeared, I looked at my quota list in ACP and found that there were zero profiles in the Indexing Hub quota where I expected this profile to be.

I found the profile sitting in the Publishing Hub quota, so used the modify profile tool to change its quota to the Indexing Hub.

When I went to the URL for this profile (as above), it was missing again.

Now all I get is the "This page does not exist" message and the option to create a new page in Site Builder.

I tried reversing the effect by shifting the profile back into the Publishing Hub quota, but it remained invisible.

I now have it sitting in the Indexing Hub quota, and am hoping for revelation and a reincarnation of the Indexing profile!

Editing a page layout with Sitebuilder

Using Jamroom

1. There was an existing profile page at that URL, but it disappeared and this message was shown to me, unasked for, by site builder.

http://publishsciencenet.jamroomhosting.com/indexing

My actions in form designer seemed to lead to the message from Site Builder. I don't know why.

2. The quickest way I know of accessing form designer for profiles is to open a profile, and then click on form designer from there. It seems to operate separately from the forms in the form module area of ACP.

3. Starting in my Chief Admin profile, I went into form designer and created a new field, called psn department about (template label profile_psn_about).

4. I set this as active and required for profiles in the Indexing Hub.

5. I saved it, then went to the Indexing profile page at

http://publishsciencenet.jamroomhosting.com/indexing

6. I copy and pasted the existing bio information into the new "about" field (eventually, I want to get rid of the "bio" field from the department profile because I only want bio fields for the profiles of members who are people).

7. Saved that. Then to see the result, I returned to the menu tab for
http://publishsciencenet.jamroomhosting.com/indexing

and received the message from Site Builder.

That's what I think I did.

I deleted the new form field after seeing the result, to see if that would solve the problem (i.e. return the profile page to its previous condition). But there was no obvious effect.

I have now remade the new form field, as an active, required field for the Indexing profile in the Indexing Hub quota, so you can see it in the backend.

Thanks.

Editing a page layout with Sitebuilder

Using Jamroom

Hi - it's back. "this page does not exist" message. Then "Would you like to create this page in Site Builder?" then "yes...".

There is no option to say 'No, I don't want a new page at this URL. I want my already existing page!"

And there is no Sitebuilder (SB) menu that allows me to delete this message or the page I have not yet created.

This message appeared after the following:

1. My existing Profile page for "Indexing" has a "bio" field that is displayed with a description of what the page is about. Recently, in ACP, I restricted the bio field to quotas for human members (Regular member, special member, etc.). Indexing is a non-person department in my network. The old bio data is still there, but I created a new field in form builder called psn_department_about (field template is psn_about) and made this required, and active for all my psn department quotas, including the quota "Indexing Hub" where my "Indexing" profile is located. Then I opened the Indexing profile page, clicked on the edit profile cog, and added new information to the new field. After saving, I went to the old URL for the profile, using the Indexing subtab under Core Services, and received this SB message, and no option to ignore it or say no.

Why is SB involved here at all? When we look at a profile page, such as this one:

http://publishsciencenet.jamroomhosting.com/publishing

there is no SB menu. It's a page created using the User Profiles module.

I have to say, I really do not understand the form designer system at all. I've been trying to make specific form fields for profiles in specific quotas, but this just seems to create tangles in the system and the output (e.g. old data remains displayed, even though the form has changed and the data field is no longer active for the quota and its profiles - and the 'page does not exist' problem)

html editor widget in new Site Builder is still not able to vary the font size

Using Jamroom

If I choose to use a single font size from a range of options (e.g. 12 point rather than 10 point) would this create the future problem?

Should we sacrifice the present readability of a site because of a future technical difficulty?

I don't understand this...

In any case, thanks very much for working on it. :-)

Site Search widget in Site Builder beta is wonderful, but...

Using Jamroom

Would the fields then become part of the global search system?

That's OK, but my interest is in beng able to set this up specifically as a Member Profile Data Search option, inside the Site Builder widget.

Being able to search on other member data is perhaps the primary function of most social networks. Making it as easy as possible to set up would be attractive to many JR administrators.

In any case, I'm sure it can be done with the help of a developer eventually, so that's good.

Thanks, Peter

html editor widget in new Site Builder is still not able to vary the font size

Using Jamroom

I know that the "fontsize= " (etc.) can be laboriously manually entered into the source code for a text, but most text editors designed for public writing allow us to adjust the font size with a simple drop down menu.

For anyone wishing to use Jamroom to present written content, being able to adjust the font size is a must. This is a bigger priority than having multiple heading options.

Heading choices are not suitable for adjusting the text size in the body of a text. Conversely, well designed headings and subheadings can easily be produced using a combination of bold/italic/underline choices and font size choices.

I hope that eventually the editor widget that is used as standard in Jamroom can be one that is user-friendly for both authors and readers.

What would other users of Jamroom prefer?

Site Search widget in Site Builder beta is wonderful, but...

Using Jamroom

The "Site Search" widget in Site Builder beta is wonderful.

It allows us to show a selected range of search fields on one page, targeting many different areas of site content, e.g. Profile blogs, Profile forums, Group pages, Group Discussions, etc. ... depending on what kinds of content have been enabled for the site.

I have started using this to design a "Search Central" page for my network.

The biggest failing I see here is that we cannot easily use the setup to search the profile data forms that members are asked to fill out in order to describe themselves to others in the network.

In addition to using the Site Search widget to target all the different modules enabled in our site, I wish the widget could be used to target public profile data in specific quotas, e.g. Quota "Regular Member", "Profile update form"

(I still haven't mastered designing the profile update forms for specific quotas and making these public with a nice layout, but that's a matter for another thread. Unless the process can be simplified, I will need to employ a developer to do this work).

Editing a page layout with Sitebuilder

Using Jamroom

Hi. There has been some backend work by Michael. We found that my installation of the new Sitebuilder Beta did not lead to elimination of the old Sitebuilder, so the system was trying to run the old and new modules simultaneously, giving me both menu systems on screen at the same time. There is still some uncertainty about the new installation on my site, but I can mark this thread as essentially solved.
Thanks

Consistency in access and download permissions across media?

Suggestions

Thanks. This is something I/we can think about later. I have more basic problems to deal with at present.

Cheers, P.

Consistency in access and download permissions across media?

Suggestions

I agree it would not be a high priority in most cases... just a thought. If someone was actually using a JR site as a publishing platform, they might want to embed all documents with a mark, but that can probably be done more effectively at an earlier stage by the word processor used to make an original document.

I am more concerned about how access is controlled for the end users of the different kinds of media distributed through a JR site. How far can and should the access controls be consistent across media and how can access be tailored for different user categories?
