After skin or module updates by the original developer, what happens to customizations?

Design and Skin Customization

Thanks very much. Your notes on the headings and capitalisation control are great.

I will ask the CSS guy to follow this thread too, as he is not yet familiar with JR.

Will now look at the backup module.

Cheers

After skin or module updates by the original developer, what happens to customizations?

Design and Skin Customization

Thanks... that makes sense, but then how do I gain the benefits of updates? I want the best of both worlds... a regularly updated skin, and customization.

I am sure there are settings or other changes that do not interfere with a skin or module itself, but I do not know exactly what they are. From experience I see that quota allocations and settings made in the ACP remain fixed through multiple module updates.

I do not know the significance of the template (.tpl) files here. Are they always stable despite skin and module updates?

Do they affect skin appearance or module function or both? Do some templates affect module function and others skin function?

If I ask someone to change styling of my website (appearance and layout) can everything be done through templates in a way that allows changes to persist after updates to the skin and modules?

What kinds of change can be made by either direct CSS editing or by template, and which method is better to use?

After skin or module updates by the original developer, what happens to customizations?

Design and Skin Customization

I am now talking to a "CSS guy" who can make CSS changes to my skin, in order change the appearance and organisation of my JR site. Things like the colour of the menu background, the layout of profile pages, or the automatic capitalisation of headings.

Do all CSS changes have to be redone manually every time the skin is updated by the original skin developer?

My hope is to make changes that do not affect basic operations or structure of the skin. What dangers should I be aware of? Here are two related questions:

(1) What kinds of CSS customizations will be wiped out by any skin update?
(2) What kinds of skin update will wipe out all CSS customizations?

I have the same problem with regard to customizations and module updates:

(3) What kinds of CSS customizations will be wiped out by any module update?
(4) What kinds of module update will wipe out all CSS customizations?

I expect there are answers to these questions here and there in the documentation, but a summary of how to approach this, as a non-coder seeking help with coding, would be very helpful.

Thanks

How can we safely employ outside help for site development?

Design and Skin Customization

That's a nice analogy and great advice. Thanks very much.

My next task is to experiment with the download process to see if it is technically feasible on my computer. I have no idea what the software and hardware requirements might be.

New module help tab (in ACP) links to "Using Jamroom" Forum... Ok, but...

Using Jamroom

Hi... The Gravatar documentation at your link looks fine, but the Documentation link in the Help screen (see attached) does not go there - not directly at least.

It goes to a page with search screen for documentation, and a prominent active link to the Development code mentioned above.

Maybe this is intended, because the URLS for relevant documentation may change or multiply over time. But it did confuse me because it looks like the Development code link is the result of pressing the "Documentation" button.

Where to view a pending item before approval?

Using Jamroom

Dear ST,

Thanks for the great screenshot. All is clear.

Your explanation of how to use the item approval system with quotas will be useful.

For the moment, this thread seems have reached the "solved" state, so I will mark it that way, with thanks to all the above.

New module help tab (in ACP) links to "Using Jamroom" Forum... Ok, but...

Using Jamroom

@michael,

Looked at this again. The existing link to /forum is fine. There might be information scattered through multiple areas of the support forum.

The module Help tab also leads to a link to "Documentation", but here it might not be hard-wired to a specific document but to a search on documentation.

I suspect this because when I followed the help tab for Gravatar Images, and the Documentation tab, the result looks like gibberish. Perhaps there is something in the Development documentation that mentions Gravatars, or perhaps it is just a bad link.

Do "Private Notes" have an outbox?

Using Jamroom

ST-thanks,

On my network, I changed the phrase to "sent and received" (and used lower-case).

Now the full title looks like this:

Your Private Notes - Sent And Received

Notice that "sent and received" became capitalised on all words.

When I copy and the paste the title into the present window it becomes:

Your Private Notes - sent and received

So the system knows I wrote lower-case but only shows upper-case.

I am still hoping that titles can be formatted in a WYSIWYG manner!

Perhaps I should start a new thread for this matter.

Where to view a pending item before approval?

Using Jamroom

The procedure for viewing a pending item reported in the dashboard is not clear to me.

Here is the JR documentation (from https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/getting-started/1853/the-pending-items-approval-system):

***

Approving an Item

When a user uploads an item that needed to be approved by the admin, that item will be placed into the Pending Items section of the admin's 'Dashboard'.

The admin will receive an email to tell them they have items that need approving with a link to this page.

The admin user, and the owner of the profile will be able to see the item on their profile and listen to it, in the case of an audio file, but the public will not be able to until it is approved.

****

The last sentence above is not clear.

There are two profiles (sender and admin). I don't know which profile I should look at to see the pending item.

Should the pending item appear on both profiles (sender, admin), even if the target location is somewhere else?

If a user posts a comment (for example) on a third person's profile, will that third person be able to see the comment before admin has approved the comment? Or only the sender of the comment and admin?

How can we safely employ outside help for site development?

Design and Skin Customization

Thanks for all of the above.

How can we give (S)FTP access for someone else to download the site?

I found the procedure below. Should I follow this procedure, get a username and password, and send that to the person I employ?

Best regards, Peter

*** from JR ***
