How to create a page where all member profiles can be seen and browsed?

Ning To Jamroom

@paul

After importing, all my 7000+ Ning members are in a quota called Ning Members.

As Administrator, I can see them all in one list and check their profile information, so I know I they have all arrived. Unfortunately, they cannot see each other, unless following the link to an individual profile from a forum message, or from a list of group members.

What we need is:

(1) A member display page where a non-logged in visitor can scroll through a full list of member profiles, looking for people to contact if he or she joins the network (or after logging in, if already a member).

Ideally, on this member display page, we could also:

(2) make the profile image size smaller so that more profiles can be seen on one screen,
(3) display at least the member name and location from the signup form data,
(4) sort the full member list by alphabetical order, date of joining, or date of most recent activity,
(5) embed a search form that searches and retrieves for display all member profiles based on their full public data (profile name, profile content provided by the profile owner),
(6) Display 'featured' members chosen by a moderator or the site Admin., at the top of the page with the full list.

If a full member list page already exists, after the standard import, but is hidden, where can we find the URL for that page and use it to make a link in the main menu?

Can we search threads inside individual groups (like searching threads inside individual forums)?

Ning To Jamroom

Thanks. It looks like your template would create a search on the discussion thread title and its content at the same time, which would be good.

Regarding the other matters, I will see what I can do with Strumelia's recommended module, and come back to this thread later.

Thanks all.

Can we search threads inside individual groups (like searching threads inside individual forums)?

Ning To Jamroom

This message is a little complicated, so I will organise it into parts.

A. The imported Ning forums have two great benefits here in JR. We can easily create forum categories, and we have two levels of search function. From the top level in a forum, we can search all threads in all categories (forum topics). And if looking at a specific forum category, we can search all the threads in that category. Beautiful.

B. My groups imported from Ning are many, and all attached to just one profile.
I see no search fields attached to these groups, and I have no way to categorise the groups under the Group menu of my profile.

Can I organise these existing groups by making different profiles for different sets of groups, in the same or different quotas? It might require some coding hoopla to move existing groups out of one profile to another profile in the same quota, or to other profiles in other quotas.

C. Perhaps the best arrangement would be to (1) make a dedicated group quota with tools (modules) available for all profiles with groups inside that quota, and (2) provide search functions that cover:

i. All groups controlled by all profiles in the group quota
ii. All groups controlled by one profile
iii. All threads in one group

D. The simplest approach for now may be to create an independent page with links to the groups arranged under different text headings.

If I use one page to organise all the groups, I can add the all-group search functions for names, titles, and discussions to the page. This might not be very friendly for mobile phone users though.

E. Having a search function for all threads within a single group may be a technical priority in all this. Such a function would be useful if I keep my existing imported groups, and it would be useful if I decide to abandon those groups and create replacement groups (with no imported content) in a dedicated quota with different profiles for different categories of groups.

F. Just as background, the main group categories in my network are: Topic focus groups, Country focus groups, Service focus groups.

G. Ultimately, I need to find an arrangement that maximises ease of navigation for members, regardless of whether they use a desktop screen, or a mobile device. I have a (suspended) network with 6000+ members, and the whole purpose of the project is to help them find each other through many different intuitive connections and associations, while maintaining a sense of overall purpose and community.

Any specific or general comments on any of the above are welcome (technical or non-technical).

Thanks

Delete buttons for imported forum categories are not active

Ning To Jamroom

After deleting the threads one by one, I went back to the Categories tab and could delete the topic.

It took a little time, but was not difficult. Thanks.

Delete buttons for imported forum categories are not active

Ning To Jamroom

I have a set of imported forum categories that I wish to edit. The modify button is active, but the delete button is as an inactive shadow of itself.

Please see the attachment.

Is there any way to select and delete an imported forum category that is no longer needed?

Thanks

New forum has no button for posting topic

Using Jamroom

I initially created two categories in the forum on this profile. After enabling them in the checkbox, I still cannot see any "add topic" + sign.

See attached image.

I am puzzled by this because I had it figured out previously, and set up forums with categories and topic posts in previous testing with the same site. There is still some hidden trick that I have forgotten.

New forum has no button for posting topic

Using Jamroom

I created a new forum in a new profile, as a new forum 'category'.
Because there are no topics in the new forum, I cannot click on a topic and get the + option to post a new topic.
Because there is no + option in the empty new forum, I cannot create the first topic.
How to start the ball rolling, so to speak, in a new forum with no topics?

Completing Ning Import Process After Some Delay

Ning To Jamroom

I previously requested and received the service of a Ning to JR import while my Ning site was still active, a few months ago. My JR site is still under development, and has not been made fully public, and is not usable by the Ning site members (all by my own choice/failure to give time to the matter).

With the recent doubling of Ning fees, I have announced to all my members that the Ning site will close in two weeks (before the next billing cycle), and that no new members will be accepted from now.

I also asked members to send me a "Wish to Stay" or "Wish to Leave" subject line message, before the JR site is fully opened.

That has led to a lot of good feedback from both the stayers and leavers, who are about equal in number. The large majority of members have not responded at all, for unknowable reasons (and are not expected to respond). This silent majority have active email addresses, and wish to stay, I hope.

My next issue is how to transfer all the new Ning members acquired since the main import a few months ago.

Can I ask @paul to do this for me under the same billing as before?

Perhaps too much time has elapsed to consider it part of the same job.

Seeking easiest way to move a single profile to another quota

Installation and Configuration

In this forum there is a post about moving large numbers of profiles to another quota using a batch editor module.

Is the same module recommended for moving profiles one by one, or is there a simpler way to do this?

I would like to move individual profiles scattered across many quotas into one quota.
