Home Page Anomalies: Latest Forum Posts AND Newest Members not updating

Ning To Jamroom

Latest Forum Posts
For some reason, the Latest Forum Posts content block is only reflecting changes I am making. This was working on Sunday and stopped working at some point Sunday evening, probably.

Newest Profiles

Since the @FBM-srl profile was created (this is a second profile in an account in a new quota to test the ability to share profiles among members) there have been at least two new member signups that I have approved that don't show up on this list.

I don't know that they are related but the visible behavior (not updating properly).

The only changes I was making to the site on Sunday evening (as I was watching the Super Bowl being streamed) was to go through every quota and make sure that the permissions were consistent across all the quotas.

If that helps narrow down the problem.

More weirdness - missing blog post

Ning To Jamroom

paul:
Maybe your user created the blog then deleted it. Deleted items do not get removed from the timeline.
Searching for "Cocoa Bean Quality" yields no results implying that this is the case.

Paul -

They did delete the blog post.

Given the other problems I have been having with the timeline feed I had to ask if these were related in any way.

Creating a sandbox copy of current site - without images - best way

Ning To Jamroom

More in-depth step-by-step

1) Do a clean JR install.

2) Copy over all of the files from the current install into the folder of the new install.
This is not going to be fun using cPanel - otherwise FTP down then up (now you see why I don't want to copy the images over)

3) Delete the cache files

4) Use the mySQL admin tools in cPanel to create a copy of the database.

5) Edit config.php to update the paths

No.

The number of items displayed is/should be controlled by a variable in a template (I forget which one - Brian told me where it was but I don't have my changelog open), but that number is displayed in the url

http://www.thechocolatelife.com/search/results/all/1/10?search_string=landen

The number 10 in the above URL says display up to 10 items with an Browse all link. That behavior can be seen here:

Feature request - Finding active ex-Ning members (Still) in default quota

Using Jamroom

I transferred my Ning community to JR.

My default member quota is fairly restrictive and I actively encourage members to change quotas to reflect their basic interest in being a member of the community.

Some members have reported difficulty in seeing the change quota pop-up on their account page. I thought I had got this fixed but I am not entirely sure that this is the case.

One way to do this might be to put the quota name in a tooltip in the mouseover hover on the profile name in the user account browser.

Feature request - Ningja skin built using Sitebuilder

Ning To Jamroom

I think one of the things that keeps me from using sitebuilder is figuring out how to break down the current pages and make their functional duplicates using site builder.

I know I can put widgets on pages, but then I need to populate the widgets. Rather than populating the widgets from scratch I want a set of widgets that includes the working code from the latest Ningja skin.

This could reduce the challenges, for many, with using Site Builder. For example, right now, I wouldn't know how to divide up the code in index.tpl using cut and paste to produce the functional equivalent of what I currently have on my live site.

I am happy to do what SE did and create a video that shows how to do this but I need a starting point for index.tpl and all the module and profile pages.

Creating a sandbox copy of current site - without images - best way

Ning To Jamroom

I am struggling with lots of small issues and I don't want to play with them on my live site.

I am happy to do another install of JR somewhere (e.g., mysite.com/sandbox/) but don't need all the content - especially the image content - to test how things work.

But I want to duplicate everything else.

What's a recommended way to go about doing this?

More weirdness - missing blog post

Ning To Jamroom

This does not make sense. If am in site-wide search (not member search) and search for an arbitrary string that turns out to be a member name I would like to know everything they have participated in.

To make this work I need to add whatever the blog_creator name field is to search? Same for images?

John -

One thing I think would be really helpful, conceptually, would be to have a "map" of template dependencies.

For example, in the Latest Forum Posts, what is the relationship of the various template files that determine the behavior of

A) what shows up
B) how it is formatted

index.tpl has an embedded template and then there is code in index.tpl that uses that template.

But then there are three jrForum templates in the skin plus the module templates.

What's the order of precedence and inheritance rules here? Where do I go to make the changes?

Case in point in the example above - "The padding is part of the action_item_media"

This is the activity timeline and the CSS is in which file? I see that there is an index_activity.tpl file that references item_action_media and I am supposed to infer that because there is the word action in it that it refers to action.css? And then action.css doesn't even show up until you select the untagged tab ... and then action_item_media is NOT among the CSS classes that is displayed so I have to go modify it in the CSS source file which puts it outside of the skin update process.

Is there a set of rules/explanations for where to think about how to look for this stuff? I haven't found one that lays this stuff out in a way that makes sense to me.

John -

Thanks for these great tips. At the moment I am having other issues with items not being displayed properly and I don't want to start editing templates until I get those fixed. Apparently I found a very subtle bug in one of the jrComment modules that can't be fixed in the skin.

But - once I get these issues ironed out I will certainly take a look at implementing these suggestions. And, yeah, I will probably go back to the default of scrolling lists in all the content blocks and the pagebreak. I turned them off because I didn't like the overall scroll behavior of the page when the cursor enters one of the blocks and it starts scrolling, not thinking about the other problems it might cause.
