Some funky things happening on cloned skins when styling

Design and Skin Customization

I noticed this yesterday but thought I would come back to it 24 hours to test again.
Ok so what was happening is that on a cloned skin as soon as you went into the style editor and say changed a font size lots of other settings would change also. As an example in the Jamroom Pro 5 skin when I changed a font size all the hover and colour settings where lost in the main menu and also other title settings and the tabs in the ACP also changed. So I went to a cloned Ningja skin and tried the same thing and this also changed other settings. Went back and forth for hours trying to get the settings changed in the style editor and was getting really frustrating as sometimes it worked and others not. Also for some reason in the profile pages all the tabs went into mobile view and each tab stretched accross the screen one under the other.

Today I went into my ACP and deleted the cloned skins and went into the Jamroom 5 Pro skin and started changing settings with no problem. It seems as though when a skin is cloned and the templates etc go with it that there looks like some sort of conflict going on between the original skin and the clonded one.

What's the best option for creating Site Wide Forum & Blogs ?

Using Jamroom

I want to create a site wide forum and blog section so is it better to create a new profile linked to the master profile or create a whole new account profile for this ? I have set up a quoto specifically for this and will link up to it on the profile.

How Does A Member Leave The Site ?

Using Jamroom

brian:
John Bizley:
If a member wants to leave how do they remove their account as there does not seem to be a way for them to do it from their own profile account.

Also when they do leave do all their posts etc go with them. The reason I ask this is because I set up a test user which had a forum in it. A few test post where added but when I removed that profile the posts still showed in the activity, so when these where clicked on it went to a page not found.

Right now they would need to contact a site admin to delete their profile - we haven't exposed a way for users to delete their profile on their own, but I can see how that is needed - we'll get that added in.

As for the timeline entries - if a profile is deleted, any activity entries that are not ON the profile being deleted will remain. For the most part Jamroom does not make any assumptions about what is "OK" to delete beyond what is actually being deleted.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Brian, I was just doing some testing from a members point of view ( which I do a lot off before getting into fully designing a site ) and was looking everywhere for a way to leave the site and thought I was missing something from somewhere so thanks for the info and looking to add that function in. :-)

Is this possible for viewing images

Ning To Jamroom

brian:
Adding lightbox support for the image grid page at the site level would be easy. What I would propose is:

- click on an image and you see it in the Lightbox
- click on the linked image name and you view the image in it's gallery (this already works).

Hi Brian, Yes Brian that would be a nice alternative as it just saves having to go back and forth if you are only wanting to browse the images from the grid. And yes if they want to view the main gallery of the members images they would just select the link that is already there and view in the profile.

Would this also be able to be done for video list pages in a similar way ?

Ning To Jamroom

michael:
Possible, sure. Implemented, no. I think the restrictive point is the skins. You could set it up like that to display in a light box in the same way it works in the profiles. The skin would need to have the lightbox there to do that though.

So my first thought is its done without a lightbox because its un-certain if the skin will have that setup for the module page to use.

I'll go check it out, not 100% on that one. If you wanted to implement it at skin level then it certainly could be done.

Yes the light box or the navigation viewer would be limited to the amount if images it would have to view at one time. For instance on Nings all photos viewer it would load the image into it's viewer then would show in thumbnails underneath the next six images to follow in the list. So this way it will only load one main image at a time as when you then click on the photo for the next image it will reload the page to show it and the thumbnails belwo will change as well.

I am not suggesting we must be like Ning as this is Jamroom but thought it might help to show how they are doing it to maybe get some ideas of how it might be done here.

Michael Ning used to do the photo viewing very much like we have here on Jamroom, it had a page listing all the images and then when an image was selected it went to a 'viewer' which you would move through that persons images. The viewer didn't open in their profile page as Jamrooms does but opened in a new page which you then moved though the images.

They changed this after requests by Network Creators so that if you went to the all photos page it would then display the photos in the viewer of all photos. It worked by once selecting an image it would open that image in the viewer then when selecting the next arrow it would reload the page to show that image and underneath it would show some thumbnails of the next six images. The same when selecting a category if they have been added to the photo page as this would display photos just in that category. When going to a member profile page and selecting one of their images from there it would use this same principle but only show images from that persons profile page.

Here is a link to a Ning site so you can see what I mean

This would be the all photos page: http://scarlett.ning.com/photos

And here is the link to a profile page. If you click the photos tab in my activity and if you click on one of the photos it will open like the all photos but only cycle through that persons photos and not all the site photos. There is also at the bottom of that photos list in my activity a link to show an all photos page of that persons profile which opens a page very much like the all photos page.

Here is the profile link: http://scarlett.ning.com/members/Scarlett

I would probably be interested in doing this for all my type of list pages especially the videos page. One more example of how it would be useful. Lets say I have 50 pages of videos in the video list and I click on a video on say page 23, this will open in the members profile page to watch but now there is no way to move back to the video page unless I click the browsers back button or by selecting the videos tab in the main toolbar which will open all the videos but then I have to remember which page I was on then navigate to there to continue checking out more videos.

I think a much nicer way to do this would be when in an all videos page, not a profile page, would be to have that video open within some sort of light box to view it which would also hold the video info and rating etc, much like the photos light box but without the next and previous options. This way you stay on the same page so you don't get lost and no need for going back and forth to pages.

Hope this helps in my way of thinking and what I am trying to portray. Once I get more involved in my Jamroom site I am sure I could figure out ways of doing this but thought it might be something you guys also may be interested in doing.

Ning To Jamroom

This is on the Ningja skin but it would be the same for any skin which has a complete page showing a list of all images.

So here is the thing, if you click on the option in the main navbar to show images it displays all the images on a page from all profiles which is great but if you click an image it then goes to that users profile to display it, then you have to go back to the main images page again to view another image from that page rather than going through the members profile images.

Is there a way to have the same navigation options to cycle through the images from the main images page so you do not have to keep going back and forth to profiles ? The option is still there for them to go to the profile by selecting the gallery link under the image if they want to go to that gallery on that persons profile if they prefer.

Context sensitive menu in Tiny MCE editor?

Ning To Jamroom

thechocolatelife:
John -

I am on a Mac using a trackpad and the usual right-click combination does not cause the menu to pop up reliably.

That little menu only shows what is available on the toolbar anyway, the cut and paste items normally fail when using the context menu so its a matter of using keyboard shortcuts to do that. It's a mac issue as they do not have the right click function as Windows do although there are workarounds for it but it's a lot of hassle and messing about.

Context sensitive menu in Tiny MCE editor?

Ning To Jamroom

thechocolatelife:
Today, while adding a new post in one of my forum sections, I noticed a context-sensitive menu that appeared at my cursor, prompting me to insert a link or image.

I was only able to do this accidentally, and no combination of mouse downs paired with function keys allowed me to summon the menu on command.

What's the secret? This HAS TO go into my Tips for using the site FAQ,

If you right click in the text entry section you will get that menu up for inserting a link, image and cut and paste.
