auto-follow a discussion when you've posted to it

Using Jamroom

Ok I understand that now, thanks!

How does the GROUP Discussions function in comparison? - because in the beginning of this thread I explained how my auto-follow was also not working for those, the same way. Is that also because I was using my 'buggy' "The Member" as a test member? But... The Member DOES have Group Discussion Updated in their Notifications options, and set to 'send email'. But in my tests of May 3rd, when they posted to a GROUP discussion, they did not get set to following it either. (this is pretty confusing!)

Stacked vertical tabs would fit though, justified left... and each could expand only one at a time with the options?

Is there a way to reorder GROUPS

Design and Skin Customization

I think Curtis means he wants to do this reordering in his https://site.com/profilename/group Groups Tab page. Would that not be somewhere in the skin's Profile templates?
Then (I thought) once he reordered those in his own profile Tab, he wanted to have all the other members (who are NOT allowed to create or own groups on their own), see a Groups TAB on their own profile pages and when clicking it always be taken to see Curtis' /group page instead. Is that correct?

I'm not guessing. I was confused. Others will be confused too.
I was confused as well - I did not realize it was a dropdown menu. One of my profile Admins was confused by it in exactly the same way too... he told me that last year when the new layout occurred. Interestingly, he was reporting to me that the other options had 'disappeared'.
It's definitely visually confusing to some people.

But I made my poll and should be fun when a few feedback votes come in! :)
...Note that someone (not me!) has ALREADY indicated they don't see any options other than the first one that appears in the menu...! :

Hmm.. on my pennywhistle site, I have the Forum module quota config set to ALLOW forum on profile of ONLY the single "Forums" forum profile ... and NOT allowed on profile of Master Admin... yet I see the option is there in my notification settings as Master Admin. ? As Master Admin, I long ago created the Profile called Forums, to house the site forums- but I put it in its own quota which i cloned from the Master Admin quota and then turned off a few things. And the Master Admin (me) does NOT have profile forum enabled yet I see it in my notification settings. This doesn't make much sense?

Yet on FOTMD, with the same setup I am indeed able to turn it on or off for Master Admin based on quota as you describe above... and it appears/disappears in my Masteradmin notification settings accordingly.
(btw, I don't see a Notifications at all for either of my site's "Forums" profile so I can't check in those... but that's ok I don't really need to see it, and I imagine it doesn't show because the profile sidebar etc are hidden on purpose.)

All this aside, I'm still not clear when you say:
"In the next version of jrForum 2.2.6 this is fixed. The 'Forum Updated' setting no longer has impact on the watching button. Now only if all notifications are disabled will the notification watcher not be turned on." ....

...are you talking about that glitch in my "The Member" test member on FOTMD ? Or are you talking about the main issue I started this thread for- that regular members don't get set to 'follow' a forum discussion when they make a post in it? Is there a problem with my Forum's 'auto-follow on post' function for all regular members, or is it just happening with "The Member" test member profile? ----If the bug is only on that profile, then ....should I apply to my own site as a NEW regular member profile like you did as "Michael", and see for myself that it's working as it should?

SteveX:
The only way to find out why they have or haven't changed the defaults is to "ask" them.
Steve that's a good idea.
I think I'm going to make a POLL! :D

How to use the notifications dropdown menu - more clarity is needed

I concur with PJ-
I too (!) at first thought there was now only one option to check- until ---as Admin--- I knew the others MUST be in there- and sure enough that's when realized there was now a dropdown menu. But NEW members might only see the one option without realizing there is a dropmenu there.... like I did initially. I doubt this ever happens to people who develop or design sites routinely. ;)

I notice after doing a random sampling of a dozen members from various years who have posted stuff at one time or another on the site, that none among the sampling seem to have adjusted their notifications beyond the default, for all options. This implies 'something' going on.
I have had I think two instances of members writing to me that they didn't want to receive an email every time a particular action occurred (like they had a new follower, or someone Liked their photo). These people were always surprised when I pointed out that they had the ability to customize WHICH notifications they received for what action. Last year I even had a very active Moderator (profile admin) express surprise (and chagrin) that they didn't realize that it was a drop down menu at all. That told me it wasn't just me that didn't expect -and thus didn't see- a dropdown option.
As a minimum solution, I'd like to see a 'help' language string that we can customize, right above that dropdown as PJ suggested... so we can point out to our members the fact that it exists and has options.

Question Concerning Groups

Design and Skin Customization

Curtis, on my site I am the only one allowed to create groups. I have a main navigation bar link along the top for all pages with a "Groups" link to /group (where they see a list of all groups with the group images), and I also have a widget on my Main page with a scroll showing all 60+ groups... that says "Join a Group!". That pulls in people as well. See it on fotmd.com 's Home page.

Wow that is more complicated than I ever imagined- thank you for taking the time to figure this issue out Michael!

That "The Member" test member was created very early on in my site by one of my profile admins who then later left the site. BUT-
I am noticing that on FOTMD, NONE of my members (either admin or regular quotas) have the notification option available for "Forum Updated" anymore. I thought I saw that option in the dropdown previously when logged in as master admin and when I started this support thread... now it's GONE altogether, even after integ check and cache clearing?
Am I losing my mind?

Yet on my Pennywhistleclub site, everyone does have the "forum updated" option in their notification dropdown, and it's all working right.

This explains why on my other site all people successfully get set to 'follow' any discussions they post to. But on FOTMD (my main active site) it's

It's only simple if you already know how the page works!
For (many) new visitors nothing is simple.
That is my experience as well. My members tend to need everything spelled out or they get lost. Every single time this comes up with one of my members who are struggling with notifications, they tell me they didn't realize there were other options as well in a drop down there. Every time. (d'OH!)

I reeeally like PJ's suggestion but would word it a bit more succinctly, like this:

Choose or change which site activities you'd like to be notified about in this dropdown menu. The default setting for each is 'send email'. Disable all notifications with the checkbox at bottom.

For sites where the members (and admins) are more savvy, one could easily change the language string to simply "choose your notification options".

...and YEAH x 100 for putting the 'disable all' checkbox at BOTTOM! ;D
