Don, I don't know if your current JR site is on a JR-hosted server or not, but it wouldn't cost you much to do a TRIAL TEST by setting up a bare bones new JR site with the ESkin activated. I 'think' you could test it for free for a couple weeks or so.
Yes I understand that you might not be able to make it into the site you envision on your own, but if the SiteBuilder module works with ESkin skin, you might be able to get a few things tweaked, at least enough to know whether it'
s be worthwhile for you to pay someone to help you with further customization.
I'm talking about just picking a TEMPLATE/"layout" in ESkin, choosing your background color, maybe adding a few images of merchandise and your logo. Maybe I'm wrong but i think you could add additional pages to your site by using the Sitebuilder module.
---It might be worth a few hours of your time just to test it out.--- The worst that could happen is that it'd give you a better idea of what you can and can't do on your own. You might be able to do more and get further along than you think. (this coming from a non-coding person in her 60s, mind you).
The other part of what you said- yeah I agree that you wouldn't to be paying top dollar to someone unfamiliar with JR to build you a JR site- far better to get a reasonable job quote from someone on the JR support team- they know what they are doing and (per-hour) would do it way faster anyway.

I had been thinking a while back about doing this to sell some t-shirts. I myself never followed through on it. Using jr's ESkin would definitely be the way to go though.

glitch when creating "@" mentions ?

Using Jamroom

Just reporting that I applied the new Core update and now the hotlink '@ mentions' are working great on both my sites. It now no longer matters what kind of combo of upper/lower letters are used, or even whether a comma or period precedes or follows the name immediately... it all works!
Thanks so much, this is GREAT and will help site activity a lot once the members catch on and start using it more. :)

creating an unlisted admin Page

Using Jamroom

Yes I was thinking of doing that- copying the code from the SB page into a template. If I did that, would the template also know where to go get the SB's "uploaded' images?
Would all images used in a page template I make be just stored in my custom skin's "img" folder as they are, or would they need to be put into specific locations or sub folders within the img folder in my skin on the server?
(thank you for bearing with me on this!)

Notifications text for "forum category" - can it be made more generally understandable?

Using Jamroom

PJ, a 'new topic' in a forum category means a new discussion.
A 'new post' means a new post in an already existing discussion.
Two different things entirely.
A forum category contains multiple discussions. And each discussion contains multiple posts.

creating an unlisted admin Page

michael:
if you make a file and call it my_ebay_stuff.tpl and upload it to:/
/skins/(YOUR ACTIVE SKIN)/my_ebay_stuff.tpl

Then put this in it
{jrCore_include template="header.tpl"}
HERE IS SOME INFO FOR EBAY STUFF
{jrCore_include template="footer.tpl"}
it will display on your site at http://yoursite.com/my_ebay_stuff

Let me understand this. I could then add say simple html into the template middle part to create a page with text and images? --> but... where on my server would I need to put the IMAGE FILES referenced in the resultant webpage? (becuase without SB, I wouldnt be able to use the SB "html editor" to add pictures, hardrules, etc...right?) With SB deactivated, I'd need to make any changes to the page by tweaking the template code, right?

How to apply the jrcore_lang strings change from Ninja update to my custom skin?

Using Jamroom

So... it looks to me like that those language changes really only apply to the Ninja skin and I decided I should probably not apply them to my custom skin anyway, since I had done some custom menu and link languages changes for my own site.

I DID apply to my custom skin the OTHER Ninja updates to: tablet_core.css, header.tpl, and slidebar.css that were described in the Ninja updates... but not the language string changes. I hope that was the good thing to do... nothing seems to have blown up, in any case. =:-o

How to apply the jrcore_lang strings change from Ninja update to my custom skin?

Using Jamroom

Ah, ok... so none of THOSE things require .css file changes then? That means I can make the updates to my custom skin via the ACP Compare Tool.
If that's correct, great! I'll get right on it, and thanks!

How to apply the jrcore_lang strings change from Ninja update to my custom skin?

Using Jamroom

I see in the new Ninja update:
Version 2.0.11:
- Change: Updated hardcoded text strings to jrCore_lang functions.
I have no trouble applying the OTHER new template updates in the update description (thanks for providing the template and css file names that contain changes), but this particular language core one has me stumped as to where do I go to see/copy/apply this update to my custom skin (which is a child of ninja). ?

I updated the Ninja skin my one site (siteB) and not my other (siteA)... so i could compare this specific language thing. I found the updated Ninja language tab on my updated site displays 98 items, but my non-updated site's same language tab only displays 55. (I do have SB module on my updated site but not my site A, which might explain a few of these language entries). I'm not sure if this larger number of language strings results from the update or if that has nothing to do with it.

My question is WHERE do I look to get this particular 'core lang string' update into my custom skin?
Thanks
