a couple of minor Chat suggestions

Using Jamroom

Ok, but I'm seeing it occur in this site as well- see NEW screenshot below. That's why I don't think it's due to a setting just on my own site.
I don't 'think' I've ever changed the css for a chat byline. Where in the Chat module's Style tab would I find that setting, and what's the default? (in Ninja skin)- I can go check.

I'm on Win7, Chrome, on a big desktop monitor..
Doesn't anyone else see this happen when they make the chat pane narrow?

All this said, I don't see this as a critical issue by any means, that's why I called this thread "minor suggestions". But I'm seeing it both here on Jamroom.net and on my own site. I don't want you guys to have to spend a lot of time on it- it's really more of a curiosity than a 'problem'.

a couple of minor Chat suggestions

Using Jamroom

After looking at my chat window and looking at the above screenshot again, I realized something about WHEN this is happening:
On the chat posts from previous days, it includes the DATE and TIME... as in for example Mon Oct 08 2018, 8:03 AM. That makes the timestamp looong. And it overlaps the message text IF the user name is also long (longer than for example "Michael")
On chat posts for the CURRENT day, it only lists the TIME, as in 7:17 PM. (with no date). That makes the timestamp short, and it does not overlap the text, even when the user name is kinda long.
I saw that if you look in my above screenshot, the point at which you can see the overlap stopped is when the posts are from TODAY (with no date in their timestamp- only the time). And the two gentlemen chatting had longish user names (like Frank Ross instead of just Frank).
That's why, as you noticed, both are visible on the same page... because of the chat post timestamp switchover from prior days to today.

To see the overlap happen, you need to have:
1) the chat pane in one of the two narrowest settings, AND
2) look at posts from prior to today, AND
3) have the user name be not short... as in my members Frank Ross, and Jim Fawcett.

Those 3 things happen frequently on my site's chat, which is why I'm seeing/noticing it more than you. In your chatroom on this site, you can see/make it happen for those 3 factors with the past (March 14th) chat posts from user WJMXRadio because his name is longer than Goddess or Brian, etc.

The overlapping name issue only happens when chat pane is narrow or narrow-ish.

But - did you do something yesterday? Because it looks as though the problem suddenly stopped happening sometime yesterday- see screenshot:

@resif , I realize that your normal language is not english, and there is nothing wrong about that at all. It's admirable that you are able to speak more than one language, and english is not easy to learn.

However you need to know that many of your sentences are very difficult to understand exactly what you are saying or asking for. One sentence seems to say the opposite of something else you've said. I'm sure you do not realize this and you are thinking that people are just not paying attention to what you said. Then you get mad.
Please keep in mind when your patience is being 'enforced' ...that it's NOT that Paul or others are not reading your posts. We DO read them, very carefully, but we are struggling to understand what you are meaning. I have been reading your threads and trying as hard as I can to understand exactly what you are asking for or describing, but it's very difficult for me as well. You use wording that sometimes is very unclear in english. Again, that's not your fault but don't insult people when they cannot exactly understand what you've said.

For you to say "shame on you" to those who are trying very hard to understand what you are writing and help you ...is not the way to get the help you need here in the (free) support forum. The Jamroom developers are trying very hard to help you, but the language issue is a barrier to understanding what is being said or explained from both sides. More patience and respect is what will get you to your goal.

New Module Releases

Announcements

Gee, you could create a pretend site with thousands of members and content... just to enjoy the ego massage of being a powerful big site boss. You could create little fake dramas between the members, and then 'punish' them. hahahhaaa

Banner Ads on Follow Me Skin

Installation and Configuration

Just jumping in here to mention that I've been paying a 3rd party outfit for a couple of years now, to use their code so I could insert rotating banner slideshows on my Jamroom sites. I use the animated slideshows to promote my other sites, and also I sell banner ads to my JR site members who want to increase their visibility on my site. You can see the banner ad slideshows here in the MIDDLE section of my main page: https://fotmd.com/
My point is that i'd love it if one day Jamroom offered a module for adding simple animated banners and slideshows that we could edit the codes, dimensions, images, and links, ...to use for our own promotions and for selling ads to others. I'm not talking about a static ad box or banner, but something more fun that rotates/animates/fades etc. It's just a longtime wishlist item for me, so I wouldn't have to keep paying those other people for it. I'm not knowledgeable enough for creating slideshow codes myself.

I'm seeing the overlap name thing in Chrome on win7, on a large desktop monitor with the JR screen/browser window large, at 16 inches wide. That's where I took my screenshot.

Yes, I now see that it's difficult since you use the same hover message for both states.
Maybe then if you could change the button hover help to "Open/Close chat pane" instead, or simply "open/Close Chat", it would be much helpful than just "chat". Can I change it in one of the lines of my chat module Language area?
I should say that I had a longtime active site member recently who couldn't figure out how to close the chat pane once it was opened, and asked for help. Go figure. Anyway, 'hover' Help messages are definitely helpful, on my site anyway.

See screenshot.
1) When you make the chat pane really wide the issue does not occur, but when it's of 'normal' or narrow width any member names that are long will overlap that member's chat message, making it hard to read.
2) the 'help' hover language for the bottom button says merely "chat", when it should say either "collapse chat pane" or "hide chat pane".

Thanks, my members just looove the JR Chat !

Send Me a Private Note Button

Design and Skin Customization

@michael ...at long last, thanks to your last post I was able to get to the bottom of this and fix it! Whew and Yay!

Bypassed the whole "icon"/"sprite" stuff ...which I thought was part of what was needed to make this project work..shows you how clueless i am. That was the actual cause of my confusion and the crappy results.
So...
I started from scratch and removed ALL references to this 'contact/icon' thing from my skin's profile.css file. I then uploaded a new .png simply to my skin/img folder. Then i changed the code in my skin's profile_sidebar.tpl to the following:

        <div id="profile_contact">
        	<div style="text-align:center">
        	{if jrCore_module_is_active("jrPrivateNote") && $quota_jrPrivateNote_allowed == "on"}
        	{jrCore_module_url module="jrPrivateNote" assign="nurl"}
        	<a href="{$jamroom_url}/{$nurl}/new/user_id={$_user_id}" title="Message This Member"><img src="{$jamroom_url}/skins/mdFOTMD_March4_2018/img/envelope3.png"></a>
        	{/if}
            </div>
        </div>
        {/if}
(i added the center align there in the template instead of in the css)

The result was the following screenshot, and it functions perfectly! It's wonderful- a simple additional function I've wanted for a long time and my members will LOVE it!
Holy Moly, I know this took me waaaaay too long.

THANK YOU ALL for your prolonged assistance on this.
SOLVED!! :D

Maybe ok as an option, but not as a default (imho).
I run paid ads on my sites' Home/Main page. Having all site activities fed to a member's own profile page would take away all incentive for my members to visit the Home page. I like the Home page to be a central meeting place that all members are eager to go look at each day, rather than just staying on their own profile page. My sites are communities, and I want to encourage members to explore the different parts of the site. It's cool that they can go to other members profile pages and see the different timelines of those people.
My members tell me they like to go browse over the various widgets, photos, and info on the Main page. And they see the ads there, and various site notices.
Everyone's needs are different.
