Does This Still Exist? Auto Welcome Message

Using Jamroom

Ah, I see! In that case why wouldn't it work to just edit the email sent out by the system upon new member approval, as Michael suggested above? I added a few 'site navigation tips' to that email text for my own site a couple years ago to help new members. The edit in that welcome email definitely helped reduce the instances when new members would mindlessly click 'reply' to site notification emails ...when they actually want to post on the site or reply to a comment on the site. Wording is everything when helping new members.

Does This Still Exist? Auto Welcome Message

Using Jamroom

Just my two cents, but I think it'd be so much better to have an auto welcome message be in the form of a comment on the new member's profile page comment wall. The admin could have it be from themselves or from a 'welcome profile' they create or designate. And one could change up the comment's wording every once in a while so it doesn't get stale. That way all members would see it on the new member's page, instead of it being just a private email to the new member.
Another benefit of a welcome comment instead of an email would be that the new member would (in most site default setups) get a notification that there was a new 'comment' on their page... helping them to not only get to their page again but also helping to get them used to how the site functions.
I know this was brought up by someone else before, maybe I can find the thread...

Changing skins (Sage to Ninja or something else)?

Ning To Jamroom

Like you ABCD, I was a total code-infant when I migrated my 8yr old Ning site to Jamroom several years ago now. It's just my own opinion, but I'd recommend using the Ninja skin simply because things will be in sort of familiar places for you already- the layout and functions are meant to echo the basic ning setup. But know that you can tailor/change/customize whichever skin you wind up with in thousands of ways- it can really look like anything you want.

Word of advise- DON'T customize the base skin itself (like Sage or Ninja). Instead, make a CLONE of the base skin and name it (maybe with the date). Make your clone the 'active' skin and do all your customizing on that clone. You'll be very glad you did that later, because it'll mean that skin updates don't wind up wiping out custom work you did on your clone active skin. READ THIS!:

Connecting between the sign up questions and a member's profile?

Ning To Jamroom

Ok, so now you've made your signup questions people need to answer to apply to your site. You did that in this /v=signup location I pointed out:
"....In the form designer area, note that their are two options in the top dropdown menu: User Account, and User Signup.
I think you want to edit the Signup fields page first to create those questions, so click to that.
The URL for this would be
yoursite.com/user/form_designer/m=jrUser/v=signup ...."

Now go to the User Account drop down choice in your form designer instead. at : https://yoursite.com/user/form_designer/m=jrUser/v=account
For each question you made, click its Modify button, and adjust the "Display Groups (more than one group allowed)". If you don't want it to show to regular members but only to Master Admin and/or Profile Admins (moderators), select those two categories (they'll be grey when selected) and Save your changes. If you want all members who are logged in to see it on the profile pages, select Normal Users.

Make yourself a test profile by logging OUT, go to the site pretending to be a regular person applying to the site, and fill out the questions. Log back in as Admin and look at the application to check that all is well, then approve the new 'regular' member. Make sure they are in the regular member quota. Now you have a test member you can use to log in as, to see what other regular members are seeing on your site. That's important because remember as the Admin you get to see everything... and sometimes you assume that's what everyone else is seeing too... only they're not! So, you log in as your test member to check- you can check to see if certain application questions/answers are appearing on your profile page, and if as a regular member you can see that info on other people's profiles as well. That's how you can test. Any application questions you put in to stump spammers, you should set them to "display group" only to admins and master admin. Then log in as your regular test member to make sure they are not displaying.

I suggest you create this useful member when you are logged out, from scratch. Don't simply create an extra profile while you're logged in as admin. That way you can be sure it has no associations at all with your Admin profile or account... it will be 'pure' regular member and thus more dependable when you want to see what regular members are seeing. :)

Connecting between the sign up questions and a member's profile?

Ning To Jamroom

You would create those "signup" questions in your Form Designer.
You as Admin can see the questions/responses before you approve a member. You can also set things up so the questions and responses of your choice will show publicly in the profile page after the member is active... or remain visible only to Admins.
There are various Form Designer areas on your site, but to get to that particular 'signup' Form Designer to create signup questions: I usually go to my own profile page, then click the Settings gear icon. Then I click to the Account Tab, and there's the Form Designer button on right top.
In the form designer area, note that their are two options in the top dropdown menu: User Account, and User Signup.
I think you want to edit the Signup fields page first to create those questions, so click to that.
The URL for this would be
yoursite.com/user/form_designer/m=jrUser/v=signup
Each question or 'field' you create for a member signup can be created using the Modify button to adjust it in many different ways. Start with that, crate a simple sign-up question for people who apply to your site...like gender or location. Afterwards, you can learn how to make each particular question/field/response show up on the profile page to all members to see (helpful to boost social interaction), or just Admins (helpful to prevent spammers).

Newsletter to inactive users

Using Jamroom

I went digging around to find back in time when I set up that form designer thing in the users' Account Tab, and why.
I found it from 3 years ago, here:
https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/forum/my_posts/44519/can-de-activated-members-continue-sending-private-notes-if-still-logged-in/search_string=set+user+zero
Blindmime, I know that thread's a lot to read through, but it may inspire a way to solve your newsletter issue. Not sure but you could try it or something similar.

Newsletter to inactive users

Using Jamroom

Just a thought- instead of actually making the profile Inactive, can you do these two things instead?:
1) Make the profile Private under the profile tab "profile privacy"- only the profile owner (and of course Admin) will see their content. Leave the 'profilfe active' checkbox checked so the system doesn't see them as inactive)
2) Under the Account Tab, do you have a checkbox like I do that says "Set user to zero=no activity possible" ? This may have been a custom thing I had added long ago (I remember editing the help message on it once I got it added), but maybe you have this option as well. If you don't have this, you could get this option like I have it. I recall asking for this option when I discovered that a member could still send private messages to other members even they were set to 'inactive'... which kinda freaked me out at the time. After setting this from '1' to '0', be sure to log them out.

If you are able to do these two things (rather than using the active/inactive checkbox), the member's content will be invisible to other members (but still visible to themselves and admin), and they will not be able to do anything or reset their password or log in.
However, I suspect their profile will still be checkmarked as 'active' and thus they could still receive site notifications and newsletters... Paul do you recall this and am I interpreting the actions correctly?

You could also decide whether you wanted to put them in a special quota or not.

How to un-follow discussions for a user that leaves the Group

Using Jamroom

If a person is no longer a member of a particular Group (a group that is not set to 'private'), they will not be able to see the responses in group discussions anyway- they can see only the first post but all the subsequent replies will be hidden (at least on my site that's how it is). So it wouldn't do them any good to get a notification that there's a new post in a group discussion... they shouldn't be able to see the new post anyway.

but... Lorna, are you actually experiencing these residual Group notifications continuing after people leave groups? Or are you just asking how it's supposed to work?

Hi, glad you are coming over to Jamroom!
First go to your ACP area by clicking directly on the ACP link in your site's top menu links. To get to the configuration areas of each module, then in the ACP screen go to the Modules Tab in left column, and follow leads accordingly. Make sure each module is checkboxed "active" in its INFO tab (otherwise it's turned off for the moment), and go to the various other modules Tabs to further customize how you want the module to work on your particular site. Perhaps you only want certain kinds (quotas) of members to be able to use/see what a certain module offers- that would be under the Quota Config Tab of the module.
see my screenshot below for the Private Notes Module, for example:

Admin Export Images from Gallery

Using Jamroom

Have you tried this?:
Go to a profile's picture gallery, and then go to a specific image page.
Look for the 'configure buttons' button, and see if you can configure it to show the 'download file' button to show, and be sure it's checkbox-set to 'active' for your desired quotas. (All these button settings should be accessible from the buttons right there, unless you have some other restrictions in place in your general site settings.)

See attached image...
